Sg Custom.....

PUCKBOY99

Irish Flagologist
I just scooped an Epi SG Custom, 3 buckers.

I've already got a '59 neck & a C5 bridge..........whattya' think for the middle???

It's wired right now for:
1)neck
2)mid/bridge
3)bridge

I'm thinking either another '59, a Jazz or a Pearly Gates neck.

BTW for those that don't know me, I'm all about classic rock & versatility...............if that helps with the recommendations!!!!

Re: Sg Custom.....

Hey Terry, I just sent you a PM but I like this idea so much I'm going to answer it here too:

Put a 59N (or 59B) in the middle position.

Replace one tone control with a push/pull tone pot that will allow you to add the middle pickup to whatever the stock 3 way switch is selecting.

Then I'd rewire the stock 3 way switch for:

1. Neck
2. Neck and Bridge
3. Bridge

When you pull up on the push/pull pot you'll get:

1. Neck and MIddle
2. Neck, Middle and Bridge
3. Middle and Bridge

Pretty cool!

That sounds just incredibly cool, Lew. I've wanted to do the push-pull pot thing on my SGs for a long time, but I can't seem to find any pots that fit because of the thickness of the instrument. Know you of such a pot?

I've been thinking about that for my not-yet-purchased Edwards LP Black Beauty w/JB/59/Jazz the only difference would be I'd have push/pull pot on all the knobs, one for each pickup for series/parallel.

I think that would get you most sounds that you wanted pretty easily.

BTW - do you have pics?

Re: Sg Custom.....

I was thinking about this guitar yesterday when I was climbing Bear Peak...I get alot of good ideas when I'm hiking.

You know what would be very cool in this three pickup guitar?

Wire the toggle switch as I dscribed:

1. neck
2. neck & bridge
3. bridge

But give each pickup it's own volume control and then have a master tone control connected to the output jack...like Hamer does it.

You'd select the neck or bridge pickups with the toggle switch.

But the middle pickup would be added and blended in with it's own volume control! That way you wouldn't need a push/pull switch to add the middle pickup and you'd also be able to blend it in to any degree.

Re: Sg Custom.....

For the pickups, I'll put a Jazz/59/59 in there.

I hate the C5....

The C5 isn't my favorite pickup either...but he's already got one. I like your choice of pickups though! I'm a big fan of alnico 5 (like the 59) in SG's because of the Clapton/Cream thing...as you know! Lew

Dan Erlewine has a schematic for 3 pickup SG's that use the stock electronics in his book, Guitar Player Repair Guide. It gives you LP styel switching from the toggle and adds a blend pot for the middle pickup. Following this, you don't have to worry about fitting push/pull pots in an SG.

Sounds like the mod I just described...though I don't remember reading about it previously. :smack: Lew

Re: Sg Custom.....

Just when you leave a thread cause you think you've got it worked out!!!

You guys are all geniuses!!! :13:

Lew:...I ordered the '59 from Lew today, so I'll have the '59/'59/C5 ready to go.
With your 2nd wiring option Lew, would that mean the middle p/u is always on....you just blend it with the volume pot?

Hellion:...I ordered a push/pull pot (Didn't he rule Cambodia??? :) ) & all new electronics from Stew-Mac. I'll let ya' know how it goes!!!

Rinse Master:...push/pull all around you say??? Verrry interesting.........
I should actually receive the guitar tomorrow & I'll take some before & afters.

Thames:...As Lew said, I already have the C5 so I may as well try it. If it sucks, I'll switch it out, right???

Benjy:...Along with the electronics, I also ordered this book from Stew-Mac. I'm glad to see it'll come in handy right off the bat.

Thanks for all the help fellas!!!!!! :beerchug:

Cool. That book comes in handy in so many ways. BTW, if you don't like the C5, it's just a magnet swap away from being a Custom. :burnout:

Re: Sg Custom.....

Thanks!!!

I had the C5 in an Epi LP I once had...PGn/C5b combo...I liked it, so we'll see.

Right now, I've got a '59n, PGn, PGb, C5b, with a '59n coming from Lew. What do you think the best 3 combined would be?

59/59/PGb
59/PGn/PGb
59/59/C5
59/PGn/C5
PGn/PGb/C5

??????????????

Re: Sg Custom.....

Persnally, I love the PG in the neck, so i would do PG in the neck, 59n in the mid, and C5 in the bridge. :burnout:

Re: Sg Custom.....

They say things come in "3s":

Got the pick-up from Lew, the parts from Stew Mac & the guitar in the mail yesterday!!!!

I played the guitar off & on during the day...not too shabby!

I probably won't get around to doing the upgrades til after the holidays, but I'm ready to go!!!

Thanks fellas.... :beerchug:

BTW....I think I might try the PG neck/'59 mid/C5 bridge combo.
