SG indecision

Hi all, recently got a 2017 SG Special at a steal ($500 shipped). Can't argue with the price and it actually sounds pretty awesome. I also got it with the mindset that I could always flip it for a little profit if I decide to move on (I try to keep a few revolving spots in the rig).
Here's the issue; it was sold to me in Mint condition, but I noticed after closer evaluation, it has a crack running along the headstock joint. It looks like it was even glued at some point, so clearly not very honest of the seller not to disclose.
Do I push for a return on it, even though I like it now, as it will permanently impact the resale? I like it but it's not stealing top spot or anything. I'm torn, so figured I'd see what y'all had to say on it!

Re: SG indecision

Unless the design has been changed, Gibson necks & headstocks are a single piece. If possible post a picture so that we can hopefully determine if this is a finish crack or a headstock repair. If the former, the impact on resale value would be rather small. If the headstock has been repaired, the guitar isn't going to be worth a whole lot.

Re: SG indecision

Yep, pics or we can't tell you anything.
A repair basically halves any value......a poor repair is 1/4 to 1/3 of what an unrepaired one is.

Re: SG indecision

Pics will help. If you love it, keep it - but regardless I wouldn’t go in thinking you’re going to make much on the guitar. SW is running them at $598 at the moment and slightly used Standards w/ case can be had for not much more.

Re: SG indecision

If there is ANYTHING wrong with the neck and you can return it, I would. If you don't return it, and decide to sell it, you are caught between not being completely honest with the buyer to try and get your money back out of it or being completely upfront about it and letting it go for practically nothing.

Re: SG indecision

I would agree- if there is a chance you can return it, and you aren't 100% in love with the guitar (like, you love it so much that you don't plan to flip it), it isn't worth keeping. Your next buyer might notice it and it would hurt the value.

Re: SG indecision

If new 2017 SG's have cracked necks, they should never have made it to the retail store.

I can hopefully take a better one later but that all makes a lot of sense and jives with my thought thus far. I can always find another around that price

Re: SG indecision

Wow..was this brand new? Can you return it? I am not sure if I would be comfortable just buying that and keeping it.

Re: SG indecision

It was a reverb purchase, listed as mint condition. I talked to the guy and he is claiming ignorance. I can still push through the support side. It's a shame cuz I really liked it more than I expected, but I don't think that's enough to make it okay

"Claimed ignorance" meaning he just assumed the object was in a certain condition, without checking? Not sure how that is something to "claim". It sounds dumb.

Re: SG indecision

I'd follow through with a return. Let it be someone else's problem. You should get a blemish-free guitar if that's what you ordered.

Re: SG indecision

While I do think you got screwed, that's not a bad repair job (although maybe the picture quality smoothes it over?). If its any consolation, that neck is now much more stable than a non-broken one. There's an old joke running that Gibson should just crack their headstocks at the factory just to get it over with. I know they tried mediating that weak point witha volute sometime in the 70's/80's, no idea if it worked or not.
