SG Love

Re: SG Love

Overall I am surprised how different the SG is from other mahogany guitars. Nothing in common with my old Explorer, nothing like my Hamer Sunburst, of course nothing like any LP stuff.

+1. That's part of it's charm. It has a definite place on stage & in a guitar collection.

Never thought I'd own one, but never say never

Re: SG Love

I got one at xmas and absolutely love it. Its not a Gibbo but an MIJ Tokai with Gibson 57's

Nice and light and easy to play sitting down!

Baseball bat neck has taken a bit of getting used though and aren't everybodys cuppa.

Re: SG Love

I have an old one. I bought it in'68. Its getting to the point where I am going to have to refret it, but I am concerned about it. The board has such beautiful wear in it from all the years of playing & I really don't want that to go away. They have been dressed a few times already so I can't get much more out of them. getting hard to bend on her. Great guitar though i love my SG

Re: SG Love

Capo, That Bigsby looks like it is a natural part of the SG, It looks as if the guitar was intended to have a Bigsby when it was designed.

Empty, That is a green piece of art!

Carly, I say ditto to you!

Re: SG Love

Angus who ? I first really got into guitar thanks to hearing and seeing Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush on California Jam II , his awesome look and sound is what made me buy a Kay SG copy as my first guitar, unfortunatly I was 16 and impressionable and I read in a hit parader mag. that the first thing Eddie VanHalen does when he gets a new guitar is file down the frets to make it easier to play...off I went to my dads toolbox, got me a file and went to town on that sucker accomplishing the task of making the guitar unplayable:doh: So I ended up doing a pete townsend on that guitar...that was roughly 28 years ago....just this year i got my next SG a Epi prophecy....its got a flat wide neck with big ol jumbo frets hmmmm...........

Re: SG Love

While I don't own one, a family friend has a '61 Junior that is quite delicious, even though it's been modded a fair bit (Grovers, added tune-o-matic, some kind of vibrato tailpiece at some point). It's crying for a setup and some hard playing. The good thing about these (and the Specials too) is the longer neck tenon, making it a bit more stable than the early Standards.

What really gets my chops watering is a Polaris White SG. Sure, the red ones are nice but the white ones have something about them. This is a ridiculously mint '63.

+1. Yeah, he usualy gets forgotten, but he's one of the great SG players. He did some nice Hendrix-style playing on his SG (Std?).

Re: SG Love

I love the SG style. What a maple capped LP delivers in wonderful top-to-bottom tone, the SG concentrates and delivers with forward thrust! :headbang:

P90's and SG's work so well together. It's like a wild animal. :fing2:

Are the Iommi pups buckers or P-90s? I think all the older Sabbath stuff was done with P-90s, and that's the sound I dig.

The Gibson Signature Iommi pickup is an HB, and straight up post-Ozzy Iommi. Listen to "Neon Knights" and "Heaven and Hell" for the Dio era tone. Check out both the studio and live tones all over youtube.

Tony knew what he wanted. These pickups sound thin in the bedroom, but cut through in a live situation.

Re: SG Love

My heavily modified 63 Junior has been my main guitar since 1983. I've never had an issue with neck heaviness that seems to bother a lot of folks. I find that the neck falls naturally into my hand. My back up guitar is a JV strat and I find that very uncomfortable to play because the neck seems to glide upwards because of the weight of the body - I always feel that I'm fighting to get it into a comfortable playing position. Also, because all of the neck of the SG is off of the body, I find nearly all other guitars feel very cramped and awkward to me. I don't like it when the upper reaches of the neck are almost in the middle of my body - Musicman guitars in particular feel like ukeleles to me. Like any guitar though you have to play quite a few SG's to find one that suits you. A couple of years back I picked up a 69 standard for a very good price but I didn't get on with it at all, it was made of walnut and ridculously heavy and the tone was very thin. If you find a good one it could easily be the best guitar you'll ever have.

Re: SG Love

i frickin' love my SGs(yea, both the gibson and my epiphone bolt-neck:smokin:) of course the gibson is more comfortable, but i think they're a stylish instrument with tone to match it's looks. now if only they came with a trem more often:scratchch

I freakin love my SG! i want a 61 reissue bad but for now my sg that I have now will do fine I've done so much with it and it's one of my two main gigging axes. I installed a bigsby myself. at one point the headstock started to crack which I repaired myself. me and this axe have been through a lot and it's one of my fav's that always feels like home.
