My heavily modified 63 Junior has been my main guitar since 1983. I've never had an issue with neck heaviness that seems to bother a lot of folks. I find that the neck falls naturally into my hand. My back up guitar is a JV strat and I find that very uncomfortable to play because the neck seems to glide upwards because of the weight of the body - I always feel that I'm fighting to get it into a comfortable playing position.

My dear friend Mr. Parker. Glad to see you're a committed SG fan. Once again showing the sound judgement & insightfulness I've grown accoustomed to seeing from you. Good work, chap. I'm a little concerned about the Strat though, and can only assume that you must have acquired it whilst in the midst of a serious drinking bout, and woke up with it the next day and can't remember where it came from. No doubt some country music bumpkin, festooned in rhinestones & an oversized cowboy hat, is looking for the tinny guitar he misplaced. I'm sure another SG, of the non-walnut variety, would be an ideal match for your Jr.

Hi Blueman, the Strat explanation: I got the Strat for my son (who doesn't play guitar much anymore because he's addicted to playing snooker) and I just carry it around in case I break a string but I really can't remember the last time I broke a string at a gig so it rarely sees any action. I did use it at a gig a couple of months back to see how it sounded through my new Cornford amp. I think I did about 3 numbers with it and, although it sounded okayish (it's got a nice BareKnuckle p/u at the bridge), I just thought 'Nah..' and strapped the SG on.

Tell me again - what Gibsons do you own ? What's your personal favourite ? What amps do you play through ? I've never really taken to Les Pauls but I'd love to have a 335 or similar. I was at a jam night recently and a friend loaned me his newly acquired Firebird which played like a dream and sounded great. Are there any guitars other than Gibsons that you like ?

i frickin' love my SGs(yea, both the gibson and my epiphone bolt-neck:smokin of course the gibson is more comfortable, but i think they're a stylish instrument with tone to match it's looks. now if only they came with a trem more often:scratchch




that bigbsy looks frickin' great. how well does it stay in tune? how hard do you use it?

I just use it to get a very gentle vibrato, sometimes maybe going a bit extreme. If I'm too hard on it, it definitely pulls it out of tune but with the gentle vibrato thing it holds tuning very well. that's partially thanks to the nice grover auto locking tuners I got for the guitar

After years of disliking big clunky 335's, I finally got one and fell in love. My favorite guitar now. It's a combination of sound, feel, and looks. Such a great blues heritage behind them. Tried many, but prefer the Epi Sheraton, Dot, Dot Deluxe, and Hamer Echotone. I recetly got a Riviera P-93, which is a wine red 335 with triple (black metal) dog ear P-90's, a Bigsby, and gold hardware. Beautiful! Of course, no staunch fan of Gibson's designs would be without an LP; I have a couple Epi's that I put the Jimmy Page system in. Epi SG Std's are inexpensive & plentiful in the USA, so I have a few of them. Great guitars. Plus a V and a couple full hollowbodies. Good representation of Gibson's high points. Needless to say, all the HB's have been upgraded, and I've put in a few Phat Cats. I've tried a number of amps, and keep coming back to Marshall. I love that late '60's British blues-rock sound.

Firebirds intrigue me too. Not very common here. Never had one, but if I came across one at the right price, I'd be tempted. I think every worthwhile major design was created by the mid 1960's, with the vast majority by Gibson. Today there are lots of refinements in PU's and electronics which enhance those designs, but the groundwork was done decades ago. Gibson is my guiding light.

Man, I really love the way SGs look. Everytime I see one of my good friends gig, he rocks an old red SG Special and he kills it, the thing looks ballin' Everytime I play them though, the necks are just tooooo thin and the body feels too thin. I just can't jive too well with them after playing LPs and 335s for so long. They look freaking amazing though, maybe if they had huge 50s necks and like extra thick bodies I'd like them more...

SG's rule. i have a classic, with the p90s, plus a Les Paul and that's all i need. the p90s are thick, creamy, and amazing. my favorite tone of all time is townshend 'live at leeds' era.

+1. The real "SG Classic." They should be making a lot more of those. Yeah, Townsend's best tones were Live at Leeds. Wow! There's a strong argument for every one making SG copies to produce a P-90 version.

Some have thicker necks than others, with both Gibsons & Epi's. Keep looking and you'll find one you like. You'll get used to the body soon enough. I play LP's & 335's all the time myself, and have no problems with my SG's. All of them feel good. I used to have an SG with an extra thick body, I think the brand name was "Vintage." You'd like that one.
