for heavy metal and drop tunings, what pickups is best for bands like diturbed, metallica, bls, killswitch engage, lamb of god, bring me the horizon, and bullet for my valentine. should iget the sd duncan distortion pu's or the dimarzio d-activator. and for a clean/jazzy neck sound. sh-2 jazz or dimarzio paf joe

Re: sg pickups

Hmmm--all of those artists are usuing different pickups to obtain their sound. From EMG's to Duncan JB's etc... Probably a good source for your question would be the Seymour Duncan atabase for any of those guitarists that are endorsed by SD. Other than that out of the 2 your asking about, I havent had any expirience with that Dimarzio before, but I know that the DD will get you to the ball park tone of those bands. Its really tight and midrangy and will require allot of gain to get it to fatten up, but hey-thats what you do in metal right? Also, Im a fan of the Duncan Custom for heavy stuff--its bigger sounding right out of the box than a DD IMO and doesnt require quite as much gain to get it huge and chunky, but its still got a nice jagged mid-range that gives you clarity in the middle of a butt load of gain. I think you'd like either.

Neck: 59 or Jazz would be great

Another option for you, but allot more difficult to get installed would be emg's or Duncan Blackouts for the ultimate in output and mid-range.

+1. For what you want, a Custom/'59N or Custom/JazzN sounds like a good choice. The '59 has a little more low end to it than the Jazz; both are clean & clear.

Re: sg pickups

a lot of the dudes you mentioned use EMG's, but personally nothing can beat the duncan distortion for metal as far as passives go

+1. The Custom SH-5 sounds kickass in an SG through an old JCM 800 Marshall ! Perfect output without going to overboard and limiting you to just "Metal"... The Custom offers many choices.

As for neck pickups, I tried a Burstbucker, and a JB in the neck of my SG... but thought the stock pickup actually sounded best for what I wanted... (I roll back the tone, and like to get that scooped sound for neck soloing) but for this style of neck playing, all neck pickups sound good, and can all bring something to the table.

Best of luck.

Re: sg pickups

ya im trying to do that and those bands are what are influencing my sound

well, it sounds like you don't really know what you want out of your gear, only that you want a heavy, modern guitar tone.

what don't you like about you're current gear, specifically? wh o's sound do you particularly like? for an allaround metal setup, i'd say custom/'59 like others have said. if you want a heavier sound, i'd say go full-on distortion mayhem set(dual sh-6). of course, the sound you get also depends on what amp you are going to be playing through:)

Re: sg pickups

Why not try and find/craft your own sound?

Great advice and I would give that advice to any guitarist looking for a sound. Although, before you ever became an individual guitarist, you were first influenced by some artist (s) that really made you want to go out and buy a guitar. I have found that in the process of trying to mimic other guitarists you find things you like and dont like and become "your tone". I started out trying to (as cheesy as it sounds) sound kinda like Creed, but have since found out that I didnt want that scooped tone. "My tone" sounds almost completely the opposite of this point, with porturding, crunchy, growly mids and a reduction in bass and top end. I am more happy with my tone today than I have ever been.....all from chasing "Bass on 10, mids off and treble on 1" tone. Kinda funny.... ;)
