A while back I posted up suggestions for for pups for an SG-400 with maple fretboard, the overwhelming response was C5/8b and a 59/PGn. I thought my trade fell through, well turns out it didnt. I got the SG today. With that out of the way, during the course of asking you guys I sent out e-mails to various pups winders and their suggestions B/N.
Rock Monkey-Gorilla Warfare/Silverback
BKP-Nailbombs
Motor City-Detroiters
WCR-American Steele
BG-Bucker Darks or Smoke Stacks
Smits-MT14/CC-2
Sounds of Sin-A4 roughcast wound about 10k/A2 smooth cast wound about 9k
Anybody tried any of these? The top 4 being the most expensive, and the bottom 3 around the price of the SD C5/59. The one question I do have is from one of the builders,Sounds of Sin, he stated that a hand wound pup at 10k is equal to a mass produced pup around 14-15k. Is this correct? He also stated that "The SG is thin and people that use too hot of pickups have that searing needle point highs. That go way too sharp. The Tone is JUST WAY TO THIN and AIRY! You really have to Tailor pickups to work and Perform well in The SG's. You avg pickups will sound good in one guitar but may be too thin in the SG. SG.'s lack Thickness in their sound."
Thanks in advance guys!
