SG - should I get Antiquities or 59's ?

Hi guys...

I have an SG 61 RI, pretty good guitar...It's completely stock...I love the Neck, the feel, the intonation, the balance...well...I love it...

The thing is, about a couple of months ago, I asked here and in some other forums about pickups...I was kind if unhappy with the 57 Classics...The neck is a little bit mushy and the bridge a little bit hot...I like them, but they could be better...

I received of lot of good advices, and decided to go with the guys telling me to raise/unraise poles and pickups and etc...after two months...I still think it could be better...so..I'm swapping the pickups...

I was decided to get Ant's, it was almost bought...but I have seen some opinions last week over the internet of guys telling the Ant's in the SG would became to MIDDY...that the Ants would suit better a Les Paul...

So, guys, someone used SG with Ants ? I'm not a high gain player, I'm a loud, overdriven guy...but I don't use distortion...I like the way the SG has a mid-character...but would the Antiquities get TOO midrangey ?

Thanks...

I'm surprised you thought the 57 bridge was hot, but here's my 2 cents.

Try a 59B/Pearly Gates N. You'll have a tight, beautifully voiced, and sustaining bridge, and a neck that really bridges the gap between A2 and A5. The PG neck is really a special pickup.

If you wanted more heat from the bridge, I'd suggest the Custom Shop Brobucker, then above it, the Custom 5. Try the 59/PG first. It's great in an SG.

By the way, Angus Young's new pickup combo is Custom Shop wound Pearly Gates set.

If he thought the 57's were too hot, I don't think that 59's will make him happier. I'd suggest a seth lover pickup.

Seth's will work really nicely, but so will Ants. I've had both in my '61 LP/SG reissue. I'm currently using a CC in the bridge, but the other two sets were great as well.

I guess the Pearly Gates would be hotter than the 57's. Anyway, first person in the world that i see talking that is unhappy with Classic 57 on a SG.

The Seth Lover may be a good choice, but it is also Alnico II and can get muddy on the neck to your taste.

Re: SG - should I get Antiquities or 59's ?

I think your choice depends a lot on whether you're an A2 or A5 kind of guy. I prefer A5's most of the time for the treble and clarity (especially in the neck slot). A2's can be blurred & muddy in the neck slot of some guitars.

For bridge PAF's I always use two 250K's to shave off the excess treble, which makes it a better balance with the neck's EQ. I hate an overly bright bridge combined with a dark neck.
