Sg with antiquities

Hi,

I´ve bought an SG 61 RI awhile ago...it´s really awesome...but, there´s something bothering me...

I´m using it with light to mild gain, in 2 Orange amps...

The bridge pickup is very good clean, but as the gain rises, the pickup becomes less articulated and more harsh... with the neck, it goes in the opposite way, it´s only good clean, but becomes rapdily muddy and too bassy with overdrive...

Well, since it´s such a good guitar, I´ll try to improve that...I Like the 57 classics that came with the guitar, they are really good pickups, but the feeling is that the guitar could deliver so much more tone...

So, I thought about putting some ant´s in the SG, but I found almost no information on google about SG owners using ant´s...I have some questions, if someone could give me an opinion, I would appreciatte, since ants are expensive pickups, it´s not something I could just buy for experimentation...

1. Will the ant´s become too bright, since the SG is kind of a brilliant guitar ?
2. My band plays LOUD, will this be an issue with the ants, or since I don´t use loads of overdrive I can control it since the guitar is solidbody ?
3. The ant´s retain definition with overdrive ?
4. The SG is guitar with much more MIDS then other guitars such as a Les Paul, for example, will the ant´s deliver a nice and heavy bottom end if needed, for some palm mutting ?

I´m playing essentially rock, hard rock and Indie...

Thanks...

Re: Sg with antiquities

As luck would have it, I just stuck a pair into my sg special faded.
They were very good stock, but with a a-5 mag swap, they are perfect (for me, I play rock/blues).
Although, if you do a lot of palm muting, you may want something with more power from the bridge pickup. (only needed for heavier music, though)

I haven't played mine real loud, but so far so good for not having feedback
They do stay very articulated under gain, although I rarely go past 5, anymore. (using a peavey ultra + on the crunch channel, with gain boost button in, gain at 4

Edit, as an afterthought, You could probably get what you are looking for by just swapping out the mags in the 57's from a-2 to a-5. (cuts some mids, and adds lows, and a bit of highs)
That coupled with messing with the pickup and polepeice highths, goes a long way.

Re: Sg with antiquities

the antiquitys are very pretty sounding pups, not high output but they ooze warm classic tones.

for a sg i think a pearly gates neck and c5 bridge is a great all around setup that sounds great when you are playing a loud amp

Re: Sg with antiquities

Well, thanks for the advice guys...

To simplify things, I´ll resume what I want and what I have with this whole pickup thing...

The sound I´m looking for, in one word, is DINAMYC...I want a GREAT sounding pickup, that´s versatile to play different styles of rock...clean to distorted, with the exception of tooooooo distorted tones, I don´t use to play anithing that heavy...and I play LOUD...

The sound I get from the 57 classics, I would say, it´s 70 % there...They are somewhat a good pair of pickuops...but I miss some definition, some "quack" in the pick attack and lots of dinamics...

that´s it, i guess....

Anyone else want to share an opinion ?

The Ant bridge is pretty powerful for a non-overwound PAF and has a distinctive honk to it. It will be less harsh than other bridge PAFs. But then it is a SG and it will always be pretty thin on the bridge pickup. SGs do on the other hand take high-wind bridge pickups pretty well, those don't become too dark in a SG.

In the neck the Antiquity will behave like the 57 under distortion. The advantage of an Ant neck is that is has a very "airy" light, sparkly sound, but that only matters in clean.

The answer to question 4 is that you are probably screwed with a SG and you might want to try a DD first.

The usual fix for boomy neck pickups is using a Demon in the neck. I am surprised you encounter this problem in a SG, though. A Jazz might work, too.
