SH-1 or SH-3?

Hey all! I can't live up with my SH-4 JB humbucker. It's too trebly and I'm gonna change it. I have mahogany guitar with maple top and rosewood neck. and SH-2 Jazz in the neck (which I'm fond of). the only problem is JB...

I'm between these two models SH-1 '59 and SH-3 Stag Mag. As you understand, I want to have relative pickup to my jazz neck one. I don't want such a big difference in tones like between Jazz and JB. I want them to sound good when together and I want just sweet bridge humbucker, which will allow me to play funky rythms and classic or heavy rock when needed.

thank you!

Re: SH-1 or SH-3?

Out of those two I'd go with the 59. I'm using a PG+ in my Les Paul right now, which has the same woods as your guitar. If the PG+ is supposedly similar to the 59 like everyone says it is, then the 59 is a great, versatile pup that will dish out the rock as well as anything else. You don't see too much on the Stag Mag on here... seems like people don't like it as much, or would prefer to coil split something like a 59 to get a single coil sound instead of using a Stag Mag. I think I remember reading that the clean tone is nice on the Stag Mag, but the dirty tone suffers.

Re: SH-1 or SH-3?

Howdy,

As I've posted before, the '59 set in my ES-335 sounds great. True, the neck P/U is a bit "boomy", but I'll bet even the original 335s from 1960 probably were the same way. You might consider a '59 bridge P/U. Good luck!

Re: SH-1 or SH-3?

What style of guitar is it that you have? A mahogany superstrat with maple cap is going to sound completely different than a thick Les Paul with a maple cap.

Define "sweet". Explain in more detail what you are looking for in tone.

Re: SH-1 or SH-3?

You could just get a jazz bridge if you wanted a pickup that sounds really close but with a little more output and stuff.

Re: SH-1 or SH-3?

A Jazz bridge model won't be close to the sound you're getting from the SH-2n you have in the neck.

What exactly do you want to get out of your axe that the JB isn't giving you?

What amp do you use and what style of music do you play? Like Theodie says, more info would be greatly beneficial.

Re: SH-1 or SH-3?

Hello guys! thanks for your advices! My guitar is Roland G-303. JB is very aggresive and compressed in clean mode. I need some smoother sound but suitable with distortion and overdrive as well. I just need more universal, moderate sound. How good will be Jazz pickup in bridge position? does it work well with distortion? for hard rock, heavy metal sound.

Re: SH-1 or SH-3?

Gustaff, i have about a dozen humbuckers in my crate you name that. I tell you when you want to change your sound, change your guitar. There ways to bring a guitar further on in a certain direction, but you cannot bring from bad to good.

Re: SH-1 or SH-3?

I use a Jazz neck w/'59 bridge. I love it. The extra bottom end of the '59 is nice at the bridge, and the reduced bass at the neck is nice. I have them in a cheap Schecter I bought for playing Korn and some heavier stuff with. Works great with high gain amps. You hear every note in chords, rather than just a smear.
