It's so that the poles line up precisely with "Fender-spaced" or wide saddles, as opposed to the Gibson standard, narrower-spacing. There aren't supposed to be any sonic differences, other than what you might notice if the two E strings are outside the poles of the pickup. Some say, this "issue" really isn't an issue. I think it depends on the guitar and the pickup. I can imagine that with a pickup with a weak magnet like an A2, you would notice the spacing issue more than a person using a high-gauss ceramic or A8 magnet pickup.
