SH-11 Custom Custom advice please

Re: SH-11 Custom Custom advice please

Here's a couple pickups that can be purchased with a "tapped" option:

SSL-3 Hot
SSL-4 Quarter-Pound Flat
SSL-5 Custom Staggered
SSL-6 Custom Flat
SSL-7 Quarter-Pound Staggered

And those are just production floor models. That doesn't include what can be done in the Custom Shop.

I think this is the only CC thread where I can't provide an answer on the CC itself. I've never split mine ever. :laugh2:

push pull pots are like a standard pot, but with the switch terminals sitting on an extension to the casing.. if you know how to wire a tone pot so that it tapers the other way (reverse the outside terminals on the pot, i think?), the same holds true for a P/P pot... i think ;)

can anyone confirm this?

You're right on, Tom. All he has to do is reverse the wiring of right-handed playing to be left-handed, which means swap the two outside terminals of the volume/tone pots.

this is a completely false statement

it is a common thing to have a split single coil pickup ... they are manufactured with an extra wire coming out from the 'tap' point which allows for part of the coil to be switched in or out at will ... a common use is to overwind a pickup and put the tap point at a more 'vintage' point in the wind .. with the flick of a switch, one can go from a fatter, hotter single coil to a more vintage single .. very cool thing indeed

haha I understand your difficulties of explaining this difference to someone that believe that it's the same terminology. I had argued with a friend about this and at some point I said "look, if still can't agree on this soon, either I have to kill you or you have to kill me" :laugh2:

Re: SH-11 Custom Custom advice please

I've tried the usual mods with a humbucker : series, split and
parallel. For a bridge pickup, if the pickup is strong, parallel can work
pretty well if you are really adverse to hum. Split has a meatier tone
as the resistance is higher and it only samples the string at one
point. With a more vintage bridge pickup, I found parallel to be
unpleasantly bright in the bridge.

From what I've read here, it is preferred to split so that the coil AWAY
from the bridge is the one that is active.

Yeah, splitting a humbucker is a great, simple mod. As long as I've been messing with pickups, I still haven't tried one in parallel yet. :yell:

Don't bother -- parallel sucks. Take single coil tone, give it anemia and lobotomize it.
