SH-11 SET?? Or bogus

I've got a guy trying to sell me a SET of sh-11 custom custom pickups. Said he bought the set from Sam ash "as a set" and that the neck pickup is calibrated for the neck. I have NEVER heard of a CCn before - but I've been wrong before.

could he just be mistaken - and these are just 2 bridge models? He directed me to SD website when asked for info/readouts on the neck pickup

thanks in advance. my gut is throwing out a red flag, pictures show the little white SD stickers both just say SH-11

any thoughts?

No such thing in the production line. He may have gone Custom Shop for a matching neck. Otherwise it’s just two bridge pickups.

I have a couple of custom customs here and have contemplated putting one in the neck, but wiring it in parallel.

Does the neck sticker actually say SH-11n? Is the logo on the neck on the slug coil (e.g. reversed)? If so it could be similar to the JB 'set' that was OEM in a few guitars where the neck was really just another identical JB but the logo was on the slug so it looked right when turned around for the neck position. Ask for the DCR of both pickups and see if they are the same.

Update: he took a measurement of each pickup and lo and behold they were both the same. I think he was embarrassed - said they told him when he bought them that they were bridge/neck. He thanked me and relisted them as 2 separate sh-11s. They came from or were intended for an Ernie ball MM a la EVH.

side note: Wonder if this was an early idea in the works to his now hotter neck pickup?

The 'normal' match to me would be an Alnico II Pro in the neck. A hotter Custom Custom in the bridge would add more compression, which would lose the 'feel'. I'd think a regular CC in the neck might sound a bit compressed, too.

According to that DiMarzio article on the development of the Tone Zone, EVH used the Custom Custom in the neck.

As an experiment, I put a CC in the neck of one of my Peavey's. Doesn't sound good at all. I just haven't gotten around to removing it yet.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect it to 'feel' good, either. Compression city.

It's difficult to put tonal characteristics in words, but I wouldn't call it muddy. That implies a bass peak. It's more "fuzzy" and "wooly." A total lack of clarity that it excels at in it's proper bridge position.

Very good description.

If Duncan made something like a PAF Pro for the neck...that would be a great match for the CC.

That said, an A2P is a great match for the highs
And I have used and really liked a PG with one.

The Full Shred neck is sorta like an underwound PAF Pro, IMO.
