SH-14..overkill in a Les Paul???

Re: SH-14..overkill in a Les Paul???

Before I make a change, I am going to try it at my gig on Sat. Seems brighter to me today, so will give it another go.

Glad i waited to swap the AII Pro neck HB. Turns out the Treble and Glass mini pots on my Lovepedal Kalamazoo got turned, so the dark muffled sound was attributed to the wrong EQ settings on the pedal...... i think my little kid got his hands on it, as i can't imagine how they could get turned inside the case.

Gig rocked and the guitar sounds awesome!

Addiction FX is where most of us get our magnets, big selection, low prices. He was the first dealer to sell them to the forum (that I know of), and I was the first guy to buy them from him and put them in a PU, which was a C5 in an LP. Wow, it sounded great. Richer and warmer than an A5, with a lot more texture and dynamics. After that, the dam broke and a lot member started trying them in all kinds of bridge and neck HB's and P-90's. Very useful magnet. It sounds like a cross between and A2 and an A5.
I got some A2, UOA5, and some A8 mags. I put and A8 in the C5...love it! Thanks for the suggestions!

Didn't we used to buy magnets from John Wymore (I think that was his name...it's been a few years since he went out of business and my mind is forgetting a bit lately). He was a forum member who had a store.

Yep, that's him; used to buy magnets, pots & the occasional pickup from him. He would sort his pots & give you whatever reading you wanted; I miss that.

Re: SH-14..overkill in a Les Paul???

My experience with PGN's is in LP's, where they just don't have much high-end, same with '57's. I get noticeably more high-end in the neck slot from A2P's and Seth's (and haven't needed to swap mags in those two). Of these 4 models, the bridge versions are all on the warm side (for PAF's), except PGB's, which are surprisingly bright to many players (as oft commented on here).

Is the PGB brighter than the PGN?

Re: SH-14..overkill in a Les Paul???

If I recall correctly, the Jazz is an AII Pro with an A5 in it. You might try that UOA5 in there. If you do, let me know how it works out. I'm thinking of putting either one of those or maybe a roughcast A5 (or maybe even a combination, one in each) in a 59-JB set that I have.

I might try that...My UOA5 is rough cast...

The experiment with A8 went so well, that I am very intrigued by other options. I am only going to mess with my PU that have the covers off. I have to go through my box of parts to see what I have for options... I think i have two 57 classics, 59, PGates and that AIIPro.. I remember one i had a 59 and put in an A2 magnet and swapped it in and really like that for the bridge position.

Will experiment and let you know.

BTW the C5 was nice stock, but sorta scooped and was working pretty good. I missed the mids of The Seth's and PGates i normally use. I had used a CCustom before and liked it a lot with OD but too midrangy for cleans. This A8 has nice mod content, tight bass and smooth top...love it!

Everyone else gave great advice. I just want to mention your unbelievably low post count to join date ratio. I thought mine was low till now.

Re: SH-14..overkill in a Les Paul???

The '59-JB set I have is in a Shecter Baritone Blackjack. I'm thinking of using the UOA5 in the '59 in the neck, and a roughcast A5 in the JB in the bridge. Just want to open things up a little bit.

Re: SH-14..overkill in a Les Paul???

Yes, PGB's are bright PU's (in the bridge slot), and PGN's are fairly warm (in the neck slot).

OK, but how do they compare in the same slot? Is a PGB in the neck brighter than a PGN in the neck? This would be quite counterintuitive, but I think I am picking this up from reading a lot of threads about the PG.

Since PGB's are wound hotter, they're just about certainly going to be warmer in the neck slot than a PGN. Likewise, a PGN in the bridge slot is going to be brighter than a PGB. To me, they're a mismatched set (warm neck/bright bridge), which works for some people, but not for others. Depends on what you're looking for.

I know what you like: darkening up the bridge a bit while brightening up the neck. I have the same tastes. Thanks for the clarification.
