SH-1N or APH-1N? Opinions?

Hi guys,

This is my first post. I've been looking all over the net for a recommendation however I haven't had much luck.

I have a Les Paul that currently has a Dimarzio Tone Zone in the bridge position. This is a relatively high output pickup.

I've been searching around for a neck pickup and I've become interested in either the SH-1N or the APH-1N, based on reviews and the artists that use them.

I'm wondering what pickup would be a better match for the Tone Zone? I play anything from classic rock to alternative rock to hard rock (say Zeppelin to GNR to Metallica) as well as alternative and punk (very wide range, I know).

Thanks guys, any help you could offer would be much appreciated.

Adam

Thanks very much, Oudy.

Any particular reason why you suggest the Jazz over the two I mentioned? Unfortunately I can't access the sound clips on SD's website. Is it a little hotter/warmer?

Thanks,
Adam

I use the jazz in the neck of my LP (invader in the bridge) and to me it's just a great, great neck pu. It's a pretty creamy (i'd say it's about as creamy as a dairy cow or two). really warm/clear good LP sound especially on mine. it's a bit hotter than the alnico 2 pro but it has a bit less output than the 59, but you were concerned about the output you could proly toss a jazz bridge in the neck and still be good to go. im not 100% sure how much warmer they are than say, the alnico2pro or the 59 since i havnt tried ether pickup a lot, but i think too much warmth would be a really bad thing due to the guitar being extremely warm on it's own (im assuming it's probally maho/maho/rosewood like mine)

I plan on changing out my invader for a jazz bridge soonish also.

I'd give you a sound clip but i'm not at my mate's place (where i have access to a webcam and my amp) so it's not really doable right now (that and the wiring on my les paul is fried and the closest thing i have to the jazz neck is a mustaine neck in my bc rich).

basically it's a really really versatile pickup, great for jazz, blues, metal, rock, hard rock, anything you can name.

Thanks again Oudy. You're right, mahogany/mahogany/rosewood. The Tone Zone I have in the bridge position currently is quite warm, although I wouldn't say muddy, likely because of the guitar's materials as you've mentioned.

I'm concerned that an overly bright neck pickup wouldn't be a good match for this however I could be wrong?

This isn't a very easy decision. I've heard great things about all three pickups (as well as the pearly gates) in LP necks so I probably couldn't go wrong with any of them.

Lots of info on this forum, maybe too much, as I read great things about all of these pickups.

My biggest concern about the A2P is that it may not be hot enough to match a hot bridge pickup.

The jazz pickup looks like it maybe a little brighter than what I want (based on SD's tone chart).

Decisions, decisions!!

Thanks again for your advice.

Adam
