Sh-4 JB neck model?

Re: Sh-4 JB neck model?

There were a few OEM guitars that had JBs in both bridge and neck positions. The necks for those could be called a JBn, but it would be made with regular JB coils and simply arranged for placement at the neck, not a different lighter wind as in a true neck version.

I believe that may be the source of the ongoing confusion about this.

A cryptoid model for a necro thread.

Re: Sh-4 JB neck model?

If you're looking for something comparable to a JB in the neck but more sensible, consider a Perpetual Burn.

Re: Sh-4 JB neck model?

Perpetual Burn is a great pickup, and it really is sort of a JB lite. It hadn't ever occurred to me that a PB could do well at the neck- personally I don't have very many hot bridges so I seldom think along those lines. Excellent suggestion.

Re: Sh-4 JB neck model?

So I put SH-4 in the neck position of Epihone Explorer. It's mounted slug side towards neck, so the SD logo is not upside down. Comparing with Dirty Fingers I had there before, the sound is warmer and more natural, but of similar power. Cleans are usable for playing, e.g., intro from "Still loving you" and other Scorpions ballads. Overdriven sound is very warm and good for playing solos with neck PU.
To sum up, having Sh-4 at neck and DF at bridge gives much more versatile guitar when compared widh DF in both positions.

Re: Sh-4 JB neck model?

The JB has turned up in the neck position of a few Epiphones over the years. I always thought it wouldn't work well as a neck pickup, but there ya go.

Super-D
JB
Fast Track 2
I've seen a Dimebucker in the neck too.

Equal or higher power in the bridge combined with height adjustment.

Some guys want their neck position to really sing and these all work.

What about the APH-2N, Black Winter Neck, or Steve Morse Neck? Sure they may (or may not) be weaker, but neither are deemed by many to be particularly bright, either. So what makes them more appropriate?

You know, I tried to like the Steve Morse neck (well, the whole set). I love Steve's sound. Before I knew about him, I used pickups the same way (lower notes get the bridge pickup, higher notes get the neck pickup). I love Steve's sound in every band he's played in. I could not get used to his pickups at all.

Re: Sh-4 JB neck model?

It's funny. All the demos I hear by other people who use his gear and play somewhat like him get his tone.

FWIW, I do not care for the sound of his bridge pickup. I love the way the neck pickup sings but I don't like the dull pick attack.

Because I like medium or lower output pickups in the bridge (Screaming' Demon, Pegasus, 59) the idea of using a JB in the neck is crazy. The lower output Perpetual Burn in the neck is too much for me as well.
