Sh-4 vs sh-8

Re: Sh-4 vs sh-8

people somehow diss the invader for having no top end, but that's not true! Though you most likely need a separate channel for lead and rhythm tone(which is the case anyway).

The invader and jb are pretty much the exact opposites. JB is the greatest lead pickup ever and invader has no match in rhythms. Invader has pretty much similar high end response as super distortion, just way more lower mids.

here's a yngwie type tone with invader: warm, thick and responsive, CLEARLY useful for leads!! People who say that it cannot do leads probably have never tried the beast.

The invader is great to be paired with marshalls as they are usually lacking lower mids and have screechy distortion unless you can push the poweramp into clipping.

Re: Sh-4 vs sh-8

After putting Blackouts in my 7 string, I suddenly felt underwhelmed by pretty much all the SD passive pickups I've tried where metal is concerned.
I really think for modern metal nothing beats actives, but passives can work if you know what you're doing
Put the JB in the bridge, that higher frequency cut helps a lot of with leads and you're seriously not gonna have fun playing an Invader in a mahogany guitar in the bridge, just wont work as well.
Ideally though you should have picked different pickups entirely.

Re: Sh-4 vs sh-8

At the last rehearsal of my band the drummer used his portastudio thingy (don't know much about these gizmos) to record us. I was miked with an SM57. It's the first decent recording I've heard of my Cornford Roadhouse 30 combo. I'm playing my SG Junior with a JB in the bridge straight into the amp, no effects, using the amp's gain boost for solos. The sound is beyond awesome. Since I started using this forum a little over a year ago I've started to have doubts because of the many adverse comments about the JB. Now my mind is made up - I will never change this p/u in this guitar. On some songs I split the JB and turn the volume down for a cleaner sound and it has a beautiful single coil sound. The single coil also sounds good with a fair splash of gain. The humbucker sounds are perfect - lots of crunch and sustain but with incredible clarity.

I would be interested to hear this guitar with a different p/u just out of interest but I would be terrified in case something went wrong and I never got this sound back.

One day when I've got the cash I'd like to get an Epi SG and experiment with pickups but there isn't really another HB in the SD line that I'm interested in. I don't like what I've read about the various custom models. I think I'd be more inclined to check out a Bare Knuckles HB. I've got an Irish Tour single coil in the bridge of a strat and it's a fantastic p/u.
