SH-5 compared to JB? Which is fatter?

I have a JB in my ash body Strat but I am finding it too bright and thin. Would an SH-5 Duncan Custom be a good substitute?
I have a CC in the neck right now which is great although a bit thick. Any advice would be great and appreciated! Thanks- Rob McFee

dont call the SH-5 custom fat........

it's the PAF on it's period!
she'll get pissed and you'll have to sleep on teh couch

I just installed a JB in my RG. But i have yet made the experience there is a sweet spot were the JB get very fat. Just raise/adjust the pickup height.... Look at my JB topic there is a good post how to fatten up the JB...

What pot's are you using? 500k? Then maybe you just wann try other pots maybe 300 or 250k. It will warm it up a bit....

Yeah the JB's clarity is good. I like it bright so the JB with 500k Pot and without Tone Pot just rocks for me :D

A custom is fatter due to it's bigger bass and low mids;) it is also a clearer sounding pup than JB.
i bounced back and forth with these two for a while and kept coming back to the custom, and it is still my favorite of the custom series as well as one of my favorite higher output buckers ever.
it just has a great balanced tone that can cover many a style:cool:
I would say it is the most balanced toned pup of ALL high output models.
7 bass
6 mids
treble 8
ah perfect!:bigthumb:

Warren....ever try the Rio Grande BBQ?
yeah i got a used one from the trading post.
it was OK but had a lot of upper mids:barf:
and did not have the treble bite i like.
a little too UNBALANCED tone for me.
scoff if you must but these
http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics,_pickups/Guitar,_electric/3/Golden_Age_Pickups.html CRUSH the bbq! both are 12K and use a alnico 5 but the golden age uses AWG 42 wire and sounds way more P.A.F and has a much better tonal balance and check out the price they go for new!
i got one yesterday in the mail, and it is just great! so long BBQ up for sale ya go!:D

You have got to be kidding.....how can they sell those so cheap? I'd think they must be junk. Rememebr all the imitation Bill Lawrence L500XLs that everyone said was junk? Weren't they StuMac??

I may grab one of these cause there so cheap! You like it more tha nthe BBQ? The thing I like about the BBQ is the thick, rich tone. I can never determine whether a p'up has more low mids....high mids....etc........just mids.

How is the Golden Age compared to the Custom?

Thanks!

it does not have as much output as a custom of course at 12K but it is much nicer sounding than the BBQ. Btw it is far from junk:14:

sorry, I wasn't implying it to be junk.....I just meant there was a big stink over the Stu Mac Bill Lawrence copies.

I also hear that the K resistance reading doesn't tell a whole lot with regards to output. For example....my Burstbucker Pros at 8K don't seem that much less in output than my C-5.

Anyway......I am not sure why so many do not like the BBQ. It is my favorite humbucker thus far. I just find it to be very deep, thick, rich, chunky, musical, and powerful. Nice pickup. I only find that I need a little more highs or less power for clean tones.

But, who knows because a few friends from other bands saw us play the other night and said my tone was great with the exception of my heavy rhythm being a little too dark.

I am hoping the Custom is my answer. I am bidding on one on ebay....but off course you have me wondering about the stuMac. What's it sound like next to the Custom?

hey no prob about the "junk" remark:cool:
they are over wound P.A.F's using AGW 42 pe wire but have alnico 5 magnets not II's
you are right the resistance is not the only factor in determining a pups tone or output.
the wire gauge, magnet, resonant peak all play a part.
as far as the BB pros being almost as hot as a C5,i have to tell you there may not be a huge audible difference to your ears BUT when putting them on a MV test there is a pretty big difference
the BB pro is 230 MV and the C5 is 345MV;)
is the world of high gain it is not as noticable but i figured i would tell you anyway:D
the custom(370 MV) is a little less hot in output than a tone zone(375MV) and about the same as a JB(365MV)

One thing I have noticed is the astounding clarity of the C-5. I also like that Robert said the Custom seems warmert o his ears wit hthe greater mids. I hope I get that one off ebay.

Hey, know anything about the Dimarzio air Zone? that's another one I am trying to find on ebay.

For some reason Dimarzios are pretty cheap on ebay.
