Just had a Custom dropped in my Jackson yesterday. Compared to the Distortion I had in there before, I like the Custom better ten fold. The SH-5 is very full sounding & articulate yet still has a beautiful crunch to it. I really like the presence of more mids. As soon as I hit a few chords & notes, a huge smile appeared on my face. It is an awesome pup.

The C-5 in my Strat was tops, but I'm not sure anymore. I guess I'll know by which guitar I pick up more.

Glad to hear it. Another one loves the Custom. I habe to admit it was a complete cr@pshoot when I tried it a few years ago, but I got to love it. It's a very well-rounded pickup.

The Custom is the ultimate hard rock pup IMO. All the PAF vibe, with more beef for bangin heads!

Glad to see you love the Custom......I am bidding on a Custom on ebay so maybe I'll have the same experience in my Paul Standard. If not.....it'll be the C-5.

You have the C-5 in your Strat?? Do you find the Custom thicker and warmer than the C-5. Gotta be hard to determine considering it's a Strat.

I am really hoping I can find a pickup like my Rio BBQ which is thick and warm, but with more clarity and articulation. I had a guy tell me the Rio BBQ is like the Duncan Custom but with more girth and oomph. I'll have to be the judge of that if I win the Custom.

I like the C-5 for it's great clean tone, articulate soloing voice, punchy character, and clarity on big power chords under hard and heavy gain......but some thick mids are missing even in a thick mahogany guitar. My only fear is the Custom will have too many mids for a Les Paul and cause mud.

I am also looking at the Steve's Special, Jim Wagner Fillmore, and Wagner Herc.

KOROVAMILKDUD,

You have used all the p'ups I want to try in my LP, with the exception of the ones I mentioned above. What did you think of the JB, Custom, C-5 comparison if you don't mind? Thanks.

I think i'm gunna go with a custom for my sg. The guitar shop has a used one for 45 bucks. Is their any downside of buying a used pickup assuming it works fine?

I'm another huge fan of the SH-5. I have one in my Les Paul Standard and in my Explorer. After much persuasion (thanks byakhee) I installed a C5 in my Charvel Strat (poplar body/maple fingerboard/Kahler Pro). I don't know if my experience is typical, but I thought the C5 had a fuller low end and smoother highs. The Custom seems to be brighter and tighter than the C5 with a slightly less pronounced low end. This may be due to the Kahler on my guitar which does not remove low end as most other trems do.

When buying a used pickup, make sure to ask if the guy drilled out the ends to install it direct to wood. Also make sure it hasn't been pulled apart. Who knows what experiment someone tried with it? Always ask if they just pulled it out of a guitar, or not.
Sometimes, guys buy them in bulk from parts bins, so they don't even know if it works or not. Ask if the bobbins are scratched, or if they tried to remove the logo.

Yeah like papersoul said, how does the custom sound in a mahogany les paul? Im thinkin of getting this myself so any experiences with this would be great!

i love the custom even more, now that it's in one of my guitars.

unfortunately, i soil myself after i play "altitudes" every time :(
