sh-5 vs JB in a les paul custom

Re: sh-5 vs JB in a les paul custom

FWIW, I had a JB in my Les Paul for years, thinking that I couldn't go wrong with SD's "standard" pickup. Recently replaced it with a C5, and I'm much happier. Like everyone says, it's less icepick-y, has a tighter low end, and just a more pleasant overall feel with both my heavy and clean tones. I don't hate my bridge pickup anymore!

Re: sh-5 vs JB in a les paul custom

So if I buy a custom 5 and replace the magnet with an A2, itll become a CC? like theyre exactly the same except for the magnet?

yes and a ceramic magnet will make it the original custom.

I hate the JB in mahogany, it has no depth and flubby lows. just terrible sounding.

Ok guys thanks, I think I've decided to put a custom 5 in the bridge and a 59 in the neck of my LP. I hope it sounds nicely with my jubilee. Thanks a lot for your help guys.

Re: sh-5 vs JB in a les paul custom

What is the difference between the normal guitar pickup and the 4 conductor pickup for the 59? (sorry its probably a stupid question lol)

Re: sh-5 vs JB in a les paul custom

4 conductor just allows for splitting to singles, series/parallel, and phase stuff. Go for it. It doesn't hurt to have the possibilities for sometime down the road.

Re: sh-5 vs JB in a les paul custom

Ok ill go for it but are there any tonal differences unless you change the coils? Also, what do splitting coils to singles, parallel, etc. do?

Splitting the coils gives some of that brighter, chimey single coil sound. Parallel gives you a slightly thicker single sound that is hum canceling, like the notch sound of a strat when you have a reverse wound middle coil.

They give more tonal options but different pickups sound different when split, Some sound better than others.

Ok will do. Im just debating whether I should get nickel covered or non covered. I've read there are some tonal differences, and I am afraid that the 59 might be muddy if there is a cover on it, reducing the treble and being less reactive.

Does anyonen have experience with a 59 or custom with or without a cover and are there any noticeabletonal differences between covered and noncovered?

Thanks,

Re: sh-5 vs JB in a les paul custom

I installed an uncovered duncan custom in my agile 3100 (copy of a les paul custom). Then put a cover on it with minimal wax between the cover and pickup and I noticed no change in tone at all. The custom has piercing highs and tight bass, the cover didn't stand a chance in diminishing that. Oddly enough, considering that most feel the exact opposite way, I DO notice the difference in tone when covering a neck pickup. I actually was loving my covered bridge and uncovered neck, I've never seen anyone do it that way on purpose. For cosmetic reasons I covered the neck, but did notice a bit of tone muddying no matter how I adjusted the height and screws.

Not much difference. And covers give you better shielding and a little less noise. '59's are bright PU's to begin with, due to the A5 magnets. You'll have plenty of treble with covers. Trust me.

Re: sh-5 vs JB in a les paul custom

Hmm ok. If I buy the covers could I take them out?

Yes, you always have that option. Much easier to get them with covers, then to get them open coil and have to search for the right size covers.

BTW, the reason so many aftermarket PU's are open coil is because guys don't want to pay a few bucks more, not because of any tone consideration.
