Hi guys,
First let me introduce myself. I am Amy Schugar, the girl that wrote and album with and toured with Michael Schenker..My site is Http://Amyschugar.com

My question is: I am looking to a Dimarzio Steve Via Evolution pickup "sound" but want to aquire it in the Seymour Duncan version?
Which pickup is comparable to sound on this? I am told it is the SH-5 Ceramic pickup.. what do you guys all think about this?
I want that "Eddie Van halen, Steve Via hot sustaining forever sound..
Thank you for any comments and please feel free to email me at:

Thank you very much for your opinions and advice,
Best,
Amy Schugar

Re: SH-5 ?? Yes or no??

From my experience: The SH5 Duncan custom is a med-high output pickup that is fairly bright and has a growly midrange that is pretty broad and is great for any rock situation, it is fairly dynamic and articulate under distortion and i love in the bridge. To get closer to the EVH sound i have heard a custom custom is more like that it uses an alncio 2 magent. It has increased mids and more of a buttery sound with a softer top end and not as tight as the SH5, There is not a pickup that i can compare with the Evolution since it is unique in its own way. But the custom is certainly a great bridge pickup for rock.

A lot depends on your guitar -- is it a "biter"* or a "moaner"*? In other words, is it naturally bright or dark-sounding? If it's bright, go with the Custom, the Custom Custom or Distortion -- or if it's REALLY bright, the Invader. If it's dark, go with the Custom 5 or the JB. If it's REALLY dark, go with a new guitar.

welcome to the forum amy!

strong top end and punchy mids with a tight bottom end, thats the custom.
michael schenker uses it as well and gets a great rock tone with it.

evh sound changed thru the years, i think his early tone is best. if you took that tone and mixed it with some steve vai, youll get something like the custom. hotter than vintage with good articulation with lots of gain. it can be crunchy or smooth depending on your attack and picking position

Hey Amy:

Welcome to the Forum. I see you're in good hands.

The SH-5 Custom is a higher output PAF-type tone. It's dynamic and punchy and it holds the note longer before distorting, as compared to the alnico versions (SH-11 & SH-14).

Take care,

- Evan

Re: SH-5 ?? Yes or no??

Another plug for the SH-5 Custom here.

For anything heavier it´s IMO the perfect blend between the classic tone of a PAF and the chunky aggression of the Distortion, very literally as the website describes "A P.A.F. on Steroids". Clear but thick, quite an even response across the tonal spectrum, and cleans up nicely when you roll off the volume.... I find the cleans and the split tone to be a bit anemic or "stale", but they ARE usable...just not as good as a Jazz, Cool Rails or Split JB.

My personal favorite bridge pickup, all of the soundclips on my website (and most of our forthcoming album) were done with that pickup, take a listen if you´re interested ;)

I might also suggest the Original Parallel Axis Trembucker, since you play almost exclusively Floyd equipped axes. You can get the Custom in trem spacing as well, but I had the chance to play an OPAT the other day, and it is quite a sweet sounding pickup, in addition to flat out rocking. Output wise it's in the same range as the Custom, but a slightly different flavor.

Welcome to the forum.

Re: SH-5 ?? Yes or no??

i'd say a Custom will treat you well for that type of stuff.

i dont know how much of a vai-esque sound it would deliver, if you want that i think the Evo would be better, but the SH-5 is by all means a ROCKIN pup

all jusdging from the sound clips though.. i just bought the JB and i'm in love with the tone. maybe mod the JB by putting an A2 magnet in it. it covers the Panama VH tone very well IMO

Hi Amy,

The SH-5 IMHO is one of the best pickups on the planet period. One thing I really love about it is that the low end is RICH sounding WITHOUT farting out. Good luck to you!

Hi..
Is the Old Vox Amp lead 125 series good? It is a 66-67 all tube made in London...

Re: SH-5 ?? Yes or no??

Another good bet may be the Rio Grande BBQ.....a bit fatter and warmer than the Custom. May not be for you though...

Splawn amps has some good clips using the BBQ to get VH tones.
