SH-6 Distortion in mahogany?

how does the Distortion sound in mahogany? good for chunky metal and shred?

the guitar is a single pup, 25.5" neck-thru Flying V copy, all-mahogany, with an ebony fretboard, and an OFR.

it has a single volume, but no tone control. I'd like to install push-pull volume pot to switch between series and parallel. what pot value would be recommended? 250k, 500k, or ???

thanks

Re: SH-6 Distortion in mahogany?

Contrary to popular opinion, the DD is a very bright pickup IMO. I know jack **** about pots, but in mahogany (deep-toned wood) I can tell you the DD will sound great.

Re: SH-6 Distortion in mahogany?

I have a USAC Mahogany Body/solid Pau Ferro Neck with a DD. It sounds killer for metal, super chunky and cutting. It sounds good split as well. I agree that the DD is on the bright side (not in a bad way) and I think it would sound killer in that axe for metal.

Re: SH-6 Distortion in mahogany?

It'll sound amazing, at least I think it will. The DD being bright actually helps the tone for metal. You want it to snarl more than to fuzz and the DD does that. It also makes it tight, which helps palm muting sound articulate. I love the DD it brought me over to the SD side.

Re: SH-6 Distortion in mahogany?

Had one in under a cover in a Schecter C1+...a mostly mahogany beast with a thin maple cap, sounded awesome. When you add a thicker maple cap (e.g., my Ibanez SZ520), the DD doesn't work as well for me. Stock pots.

Re: SH-6 Distortion in mahogany?

I got a Distortion in an alder guitar with 300k pots. I would opt for 500k pots, unless your axe is uncharacteristically bright.

Re: SH-6 Distortion in mahogany?

Aceman has more than one lp with a Distortion i think! He loves em!It's not chunky like the Custom ,but for leads and fast rythm ,it's killer!

Re: SH-6 Distortion in mahogany?

thanks for the replies. just placed my order for the TB-6 and a 500k p/p pot from Warmoth.

Re: SH-6 Distortion in mahogany?

In my mahogany guitar, I am currently torn between choosing a Distortion and a Dimebucker.

Re: SH-6 Distortion in mahogany?

I'd go with distortion baritone. Its a full sounding, aggressive pickup with all the frequencies you need. I found the dimebucker's treble a bit on the harsh side.

Re: SH-6 Distortion in mahogany?

Thanks, Rowan. I just put a Jazz(n) in the neck position, and I am totally impressed. I have always liked the Jazz in other people's guitars, but it sounds like Heaven in my Epiphone, and I love Jessica Alba. Shoot, I hope my girlfriend doesn't see this. For the bridge position, I am totally into the sound of hot, overwound ceramic magnet pickups and Jessica Alba. She's on Jay Leno tonight, so I am kind of distracted right now.

Nocturnal, in my experience, the Distortion sounds awesome in mahogany and alder body guitars. By comparison, it seems really agressive (great for punk n stuff) in an alder guitar and a little more tame in a mahogany guitar. And if I ever met Jessica Alba, I would not be tempted to be unfaithful to my girlfriend.

Aceman has more than one LP, but LP #1 has a Distortion! And I LOVE it!!!!!!

It is great for chunk and shred - but not as chunky as a Custom. However - it's reall clear and allows serious use of the bass from the amp. It is a GREAT pup for mahogany.

Also - I'm a fan of 300k Gibson pots for hotter/trebly pups like the Distortion. I might totally recommend that with the 25 1/2 scale.

thank you! everybody is always talking about 500 & 250k, but 300k never gets any credit. i love my JB with it. ive actually been considering ordering one for the guitar with the DD (though its got a '59 in the neck, and that might get a bit too bassy with any less than 500k)
