Ok, Ok, so apparently there are no guitars that have the SH-6 stock, and im having trouble finding a SH-5 equipped guitar... but there are plenty of SH-4's :D so im just wondering if anyone with experience could tell me how the SH-6 and the SH-4 compare for cleans.... thanx

Most A5 pickups like the JB, 59, and C5 are going to sound nicer for cleans than Ceramic based pickups like the Custom or Distortion. That said, ceramic pickups can still have a nice clean sound, but usually only after you've backed the guitar's volume down a little bit.

The Distortion and Custom have a lot of push to them, which smooths out rough distortion nicely, but sometimes adds too much sizzle for cleans. Between the two, I like the tone of the Custom more.

The middleground between the JB and Custom is the C5, so if you want something that sounds really good on gain and clean, try a Custom 5.

Just as a rough guideline, not exact....
Custom - Zakk Wylde type sound
Distortion - Metallica/Megadeth type sound
JB - Ratt/Jake E Lee/Dio
Custom 5 - Rush/VH type sound

Cleans don't seem to be your priority if you're looking at higher output pickups. If that's the case, then maybe you should pick the pickup that will have the best style of distortion that you want. With some volume knob rolling you can get cleans, and lower the pickup as much as possible to where it still sounds good, that will help with cleans too. The JB is supposed to be awesome split, which would help with cleans. But even the Hot Rails in my strat had decent cleans with the guitar volume rolled down a couple of notches.

i never tried a DD, but what i could tell you, is that unless you're playing country-ish chicken pickin stuff, you won't like a JB for cleans

JB, custom, and distortion aren't going to have amazing cleans. I usually get a good clean if I use the middle position on my pickup switch. But I guess it depends on which pickup you have in the neck. I get fairly decent cleans doing that with a custom in the bridge and 59 in the neck.

erg, pickup shopping is really frusterating and time consuming... anyhow, i think i have settled on the JB in the bridge, and a 59 in the neck... i played some today, and it destroyed the guitar that i heard with the 81/60 screw EMG :D oh yea and appareently the only guitar you can get with a sh6 stock is a washburn x2pro i believe... but who the hell stocks thoes??? owell... i think i should be happy, and call this guitar more... um, well rounded, and when i need my metal as balls guitar SH-6 and SH-2 it is :D thanx for the help guys,... l8er

the old max cavalera esp viper (brazillian green, one bridge pickup, 600 model and up i believe) have a DD, as well as the new Wayne Static esp explorer. and my guitar....:headbang:

for cleans, its actually my favorite guitar for live work. the mids let the cleans cut through, but with a little tone knob and volume knob adjustment, or like Rowan said, playing in the middle position, it'll sound great. the sh-6 really reacts to both the volume and the tone knob. i can get very blooming cleans, to spanking cleans, to mush if i want, all from the guitar.
