SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

when I hear things like this it makes me lean back towards the Invader as I will have a brightish sounding guitar thanks to the Alder and Rosewood........Argh its such a tough call

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

ok I have -

Line 6 spider mk 3 120 watt - I love this despite poor reviews

Crate GT1200H solid state - Literally one of the best metal amps Ive used

recording equipment is - line 6 UX1 sound card with Pod farm

I hope this helps

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

With both those amps, you won't need max gain. I had the spider 3 in combo form, and the spider with the gain boost would become too much even with my EVO. Now the Duncan distortion with my Crate GLX just rocked. I should have kept that amp. It was my fav of the crate line. If you mostly play rhythm, and want a crushing sound, then the invader. If you play some leads the Distortion. Right now in my Strat, I have a GFS crunch rail, and its very balanced in the EQ. It works great for what I want now. I just like amp bass more then pickup bass.

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

I agree about using amp Bass instead of having a muddy pickup. Also my mk3 spider is the combo amp too :)

I much rather dial in the tone I want using the amp, than getting almost stuck with a 1 dimensional tone from the pickups. For this reason SH-6 seems alot safer a choice. I do Love that Machine head tone - HATE EMG;s though. So using the slightly brighter SH-6 and dialing in the right amount of bass seems the way to go.

Crate amps just plain out kick @ss........well Underrated. How they handle gain for Solid state is brutal. I had a basic Ibanez gio with stock pups. Played a gig using the Crate Gt1200h covering Slipknot and the tone literally blew the crowd away.

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

I wanted the Crate VTX 200S with the full eq controls. Played one at GC, and I loved it. But they cancelled it after I got some money up. They should have kept that line.

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

Ok so I watched some Youtube comparison videos.....and In Alder the Invader didnt sound muddy at all?. Sounded like an Even but crushing tone.......

So Alder maybe does clear it up enough to stop it from sounding too bassy?.

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

Since you are not quite sure what you want maybe you should consider the distortion/invader combo, otherwise known as Duncan Performer Detonator! Only $30 new, sometimes you can get it used for $20 or less. This is a duncan distortion with invader poles. Looks like an invader, sounds more like a distortion. If you don't mind experimenting could try this first and then if you don't like it, the choice between sh-6 and sh-8 will be easier to make with that detonator baseline.

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

I have just tried looking for the pickups youve mentioned and I cant find them :S I checked ebay etc and there were 0 results found??

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

All great examples. I personally love the Distortion. Never any fear of mud, you can really run the bass on the amp. But if you mud it up right out of the gate...good luck getting it right.

Can't speak to the Invader. But mega gain amp can handle the distortion better no doubt with more gain.

The PATB-2 is an elite group. Never heard one. But the guys who use this think it is the cat's meow AND the bees knees all rolled into one.

Jazz neck will handle the cleans, but the 59 isn't a bad choice either. Again - I'd go Jazz if fear of mud is an issue.

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

I just installed that duncan performer in a project guitar of mine and I am very happy with it. It is a crazy output distortion pickup but not quite as piercing as the distortion, not muddy either.

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

Lewisstorer, I've had both the SH6 and the SH8 in my LP (full mahogany guitar). In my experince, they're quite different pickups. Inteded for the same genres, sure, but I would think (been a while since I had it) the SH6 would be a bit more balanced, while the SH8 is just about the chuggiest pickup you can get. I've had some troubles making it cut through in band situations, since it is very dark (it actually kinda puts the guitar in the grey zone between guitar and bass), but I do love the tone it gives me when distorted (mind you, this is NOT your PU of choice if you wanna play cleans. get another pickup for the neck for that).

What you WILL get is just about the heaviest sounding bridge pickup money can buy, and here's a fun little bonus most people seem to be completely unaware of: since it's ouput is so high, it actually does 70's crunchy tones very, very well. What would usually be just a bit of a harsh clean for most guitars, this thing will turn into a full on 70's heavy rock crunch.

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

Invader bridge/ 59 combo as mentioned at the start of the thread is perfect. Jazz neck is awful for metal IMO and I dont understand how someone couldnt get a tight chugging tone from an Invader. Thats exactly what its so good at.

Those are Duncan Designed, not Seymour Duncan and they do not sound as good as the real Duncans. I would rather keep stock pickups in a guitar and save the money to get a real Invader.

Yeah, real duncans are usually ideal, the designed detonator is pretty unique though. There are no USA duncans that actually sound like the detonator unless you can figure out how to get those giant invader screws into a duncan distoriton (you can't). I'm my experience the USA made. Ok, hopefully this thread doesn't explode into a designed vs. USA throwdown, there are too many of those already ;)

Funny thing that - my mate had that exact combo (InvaderB/JazzN) in his SG. He just used the neck for clean stuff, since it didn't really do anything else particularly well. Then last week, he got new pots (since his old electronics were dodge as hell), trieed it out (turns out it made the Jazz microphonic as hell), so he dropped by the supermarket and picked up some wax to pot it in.

He couldn't be happier. Says it's like a whole new dimension to the pickup, even started using it for distorted stuff.
