SH-6N paired with an SH-5 the bridge and SSL5 in the middle?

Has anyone tried the SH-6N in the neck along with a middle pickup and an SH-5 Custom?

I have a Custom 7 on the way for my 7-string Ibanez. I'm thinking about ditching all the stock pickups in favor for the SSL5-7 in the middle and a Distortion Neck 7 in the neck.

Would the SH-6N overpower the bridge and middle? I know the SH-5 has more power than the SH-6N, but I was just worried the SH-6N would be too much in the neck pickup for it.

Great combo. I have the custom in the bridge of my jackson with a dd distortion neck. Assuming dd and duncan usa are similar spec, they play fairly well together, especially if youre running on one channel for both rhythm and lead. distortion neck isnt overly bassy and has a nice pronounced midrange

Re: SH-6N paired with an SH-5 the bridge and SSL5 in the middle?

That's why I'm interested in it. I like a bright, Stratty neck sound. My favorite passive neck pickup is the DiMarzio Humbucker from Hell, but they don't offer that in a neck variant, so I'm looking at the Distortion neck as an alternative.

I'm also looking at the SSL5 instead of the standard Duncan single coil neck since it seems to have a bit more beef and output to go against the high-output of the Custom and Distortion.

If you want stratty, im not sure its for you to be quite honest. The best strat tone ive gotten out of a split humbucker is my bkp juggernaut set. For hot, massive sounding metal leads with a lot of gain, the distortion neck is a great option.

I don't mean literally like a Strat. I mean it's got that high end spank like one. Reading the specs and impressions, it seems very close to a Humbucker from Hell. main differences are the TONS more mids and output, which I don't mind.

If it doesn't work out, I'll probably try the Jazz. I currently have an Air Norton in there and it's too smooth for my taste.

I thought the air norton was pretty stratty for a humbucker. Based on your description im thinking alpha neck. Bright and spanky as all hell neck pickup

Yeah the Alpha would be nice as well. Just a bit too hard to find. Plus its pricey. :(

Re: SH-6N paired with an SH-5 the bridge and SSL5 in the middle?

And on the price thing: Just get the alpha neck, take it from someone who tried to go the cheap way. I had a titan b4 my juggernaut set and that was a mistake. I dont think you'll regret going with the expensive option if its what u want

Re: SH-6N paired with an SH-5 the bridge and SSL5 in the middle?

Well I ended up futzing with the wiring while installing the SH-5. Turns out the bridge was soldered to the wrong lug on the 5-way, so I was getting the output from both the bridge and neck on position 1. Doing that actually fixed it.

But after messing with the SH-5, I think I may end up going the route I originally wanted. Gonna check out the EMTY set.
