SH1-59

Just brought home a beautiful Fender CS Tele with a SD SH1-59 in the neck position. Since I'm relatively new to HB's, got a quick question.....the output of the pu is very bright and clear, which, to me, is a good thing.....except for the low E, which is quite a bit darker than the other strings, even the A. So, my question is, is this "normal", or is there a way to make the E sound more like the other 5 stings? Got to thinking, maybe that's why Keef took the low E string off of Micawber.......

What you are experiencing is pretty common with the 59n, folks claim its boomy. I dont have that issue but others do, you can play with pickup height and amp eq and may help some. Even adjusting the screw poles some may help also.

What I often do with Neck pickups is have the pickup approximately level with the body of the guitar, and raise the screw pole for the D string. Sometimes the A pole as well, but normally its only the D pole for the neck pickup. I find that as little as 1/2 turn can be enough to get an even string balance. The low E pole is always set low, to avoid the flubbyness you have mentioned.

This can be a complaint with the 59, so the suggestions here may help. You may want to try it with a fresh E string to make sure that isn't the issue.

beaubrummel's suggestion is best. Lowering the bass side of the pup should reduce the "volume" of the bass strings and raising those poles will reduce the bassiness and increase the treble in those lower strings.

If the 59 ends up not working for you, The Dimarzio "Humbucker from Hell" makes a great Tele neck. Much tighter bass, and it has some single coil character, but keeps up with a Tele bridge without overpowering it like some humbuckers will.

Oooh - good call. Never thought of that in a Tele, but yeah...

Also, a Pearly Gates or a Screaming' Demon may work nicely too. They both have a little less bass and more treble. Or even a Jazz.

Update....tried raising the pole pieces on the E, A, and D without lowering the pickup and it helped a lot. Much more balanced. I've just got to keep telling myself "this isn't a Tele single-coil pickup, it's gonna sound darker than you're used to". I think I like it for the change....:D
