Re: sh1 or sh2 or pearly gates

You aren't really going to get a strat sound from a split neck humbucker.

If you want something between the '59 and Pearly Gates pick up a 1/2" neodymium magnet and degauss the A5 in the '59. Wave it by a few times and boom, you're playing with a degaussed magnet (compared with standard A5 degaussed A5 has softer highs and more midrange)

IDK about A2 for basswood but the Pearly Gates is my favorite production neck humbucker. So maybe worth a try. Not going to be as good for high-gain metal work as the '59 though.

You also might want to consider the Jazz. I've found that weaker winds in humbuckers get closer to a true strat sound. YMMV though.

Re: sh1 or sh2 or pearly gates

'59's and Jazz are bright with a sharp high end (A5 mags), PGN's are warm with more rounded highs (A2's).

Re: sh1 or sh2 or pearly gates

the 59 is two conductor so if you want to split it, then you need the harder to find 4 conductor version.
Pg is a sweet, deep and warm humbucker, but i think split it wont suit the modern styles i'm guessing you play (given that you play a JS). Pg's are warmer sounding humbuckers than 59, but the 59 sounds pretty good split (i had a dual 59 splittable combo in a strat).
Its pretty hart to recommend one or the other because you have not told us anything about the style of music you play, or what kind of amp rig you use but actually,
i think the best pickup for versatility in a modern axe would actually be neither the 59 nor the PG.
Check out a Jazz neck. Failing that, then probably a 59 rather than the PG.

i liked very much the 59 but if the pg or sh2 can be cleaner than the sh1 and with a good split, it will be good
my heroes are gary moore, john sykes (live thin lizzy 83 for example) or slash
so a good and warm, hot sound in neck
the linking between the notes are fat and warm

which pickup has the best clean and sound with split in bridge? sh4 or sh6? (i have a sh6 with an old guitar)
i play with a laney lc 15, full tube amp
but with some pedals too

Re: sh1 or sh2 or pearly gates

ah right.
you need the tried and tested combination of a JB bridge and jazz in the neck.
Both of them split nicely and they work well in tandem.
Both are excellent in strat type axes.
Seymours original and favourite set - and not expensive either!

Re: sh1 or sh2 or pearly gates

My recommendation is based on what will do the job best for the OP in terms of satisfying his requirements and suiting his guitar. It is just a happy coincidence that its also Seymour's favourite set. In a superstrat, a jb/jazz with coil splits is a killer combination and were both originally designed to work together and complement each other. They will cover a huge range of sounds- including all the stuff that the OP asked for. I actually have no idea what Mr. Duncan plays like because ive never heard him play. I do know that he knows a thing or two about making pickups that sound good. The JB/Jazz combo seemed to be okay with Jeff Beck too - and god knows how many other players over the years. Its a winning combination in superstrats - which most definitely the type of the guitar the OP is asking about installing pickups in.

No one has mentioned the Screamin Demon?!!

The OP asked for "a good and warm, hot sound in the neck" and "good and clean when split". The Demon is warmer than a 59 or Pearly and especially the Jazz (more mids), and is very clean and articulate. And because of its higher output is much better split. One of the best neck pups available, IMO. good and warm
