Ive got the custom custom in my ibanez neck thru in the bridge, but its about to be replaced. 5 piece walnut/maple neck w/mahog wings. It has a 59 bridge model in the neck, which im not crazy about, but the custom custom is amazing on leads, Super dynamic and harmonically rich. Anyone tried it in the neck?

Re: Sh11 custom custom in the neck?

I have never heard/read of it.

I think the fears are - and very legitimately;
1. Too loose in bass for neck
2. Too soft/round in highs for neck
3. Too hot in general for neck

I get why you think it would be great though. I can imagine a version similar maybe a lot less hope, and a little tighter bottom that could be amazing. a 9k Custom Custom with short poles on the bass might be a custom shop order one day. Until then, I pretend a PAF Pro is similar.

That said - consider a PAF Pro

The CC is a particular pup in a Les Paul - but in that Ibby with a tree it would be fantastic in a VH 1984 kind of way. But in the neck? Hmmmm.....go for it and report!

I thought about the paf pro cause people say it has that half cocked wah sound. I just thought it might be a bit too spikey in the treble. I was thinking evo or liquifire or the duncan sentient. Maybe the pearly gates is a good option...its a2 as well

An A4 magnet will get rid of the mid scoop in the 59n, if you otherwise like the tone.

its a bit muddy and undefined under high gain. What im really looking for is something like petruccis lead tone or bjorn gelottes (in flames) lead tone from the album battles

Re: Sh11 custom custom in the neck?

Don't know if it will get you those specific tones. An A4 will flatten the pickups eq. I don't find the one I have to be muddy under gain. And I tend to use a lot of it.

An A3 Custom in parallel makes a pretty nice neck pickup if you ask me. You could also try an A2 Full Shred for a useable SH-11ish neck tone.

Re: Sh11 custom custom in the neck?

I tried a Custom 5 in the neck and it didn't work because it was too bassy and undefined.

Hybrids are great if you want complexity in the neck.

^Edit. I only tried it in series.

I'm still wondering what modern shred guys use the Jazz (or the Sentient, for that matter). Any prominent recordings to serve as examples?

Re: Sh11 custom custom in the neck?

I am sure the artist people at Duncan have a nice list. I don't, other than hearing other people use them live. Sounds the way it is supposed to, although admittedly it isn't my genre.

It doesn't really have much of one. It's more just like a PAF with less low end, and more mids and presence, which is why many like it in the neck.

Re: Sh11 custom custom in the neck?

Hot bridge PU's in the neck slot are going to be on the warm side, some even dark, and also have a lot of output, which may overpower what's in the bridge. Not particularly appealing to the average player, but if it sounds interesting to you, try it and see what you think. Customs are very amenable to mag swaps, so it may be more useable with a brighter magnet; (A2's aren't blessed with a lot of treble).

A3 and 0.5" screws [I prefer hex head] under the low strings for the neck pickup.

I use a series JB with that config, and while it is fat, it's not bloated. Sounds much like an A2 JB in the bridge ought to. [I also have it studs towards neck, and pickup screwed in considerably on the bass side, and the screw polepieces screwed out on that side to level volume. MUCH tighter on bass strings that way, and fatter on high strings.]

Same should work for Custom. A series/parallel switch would be nice, too.
