i like the shadows fall tone a lot, but i can't seem to get near it. i've tried a couple of multieffects pedals like the rocktron utopia and podxt live, but i can't get that particular kind of grinding tone and harmonics. i don't know how to describe that particular quality to the sound, but it's just something that sounds really hot and aggressive. i thought it might just be something about the emg 81 that sounds that way, but i can't acheive it now that i've installed it.

i know what kind of amps they use, but they all get that characteristic tone either way. what does it take? any ideas? i'm using a vox ad100 by the way, thanks in advance

Re: shadows fall, lamb of god, all that remains

My suggestion is to change your amp.:bigok:

Re: shadows fall, lamb of god, all that remains

Shadows Fall are Krank amps and Lamb Of God are triple recto's. I am not sure there is one pedal or modeling unit that could emulate both effectively.

Those guys do have killer metal tone, but it's damn near impossible to recreate someone's studio tone most of the time. Sure SF uses krank and LOG use mesas, but that's probly only live. I'm sure they're just like every other band that uses a bunch of different amps blended to achieve that awesome sound on their records. I quit trying to emulate my fave bands tones long ago b/c of this. I suggest just finding a good metal tone that YOU like, that's all that really matters right?

One of the keys to the modern metal tone is front-ending the amp with a distortion pedal. These guys are all over the board pickup, guitar, tuning, and amp-wise, but they pretty much ALL use the "drive-0, level-10" pedal thing.

Lamb of God is now using the Mark IV.

LoG has ALWAYS used the MKIV.

No... it's really not that hard to recreate a recorded tone. Maybe not to the T, but with the same setup used to record the albums, I can get 95% there.

+1... SF and ATR (ATR wins this one for tone contest, IMO) run Maxon OD808's infront of their amps, and for a good reason.

Re: shadows fall, lamb of god, all that remains

You're right but when they were Burn the Priest they were using Mesa Rectifiers. I don't know which one but I seen pics of them with the Rectifiers.

Re: shadows fall, lamb of god, all that remains

LOG's tone makes me laugh. I don't know why but every time I hear them I just kinda chuckle.

I bet that new Boss METALCORE pedal could do the trick.

Every time a thread like this gets started it seems like we always come to the same conclusion...you need a better amp, a better pedal, and better chops. And you still probably won't sound JUST RIGHT. Get a set of tubes that you dig, let 'em get warm (get your volume knob up there), get and OD/distorto/fuzz box you dig for the thick and heavy parts, and play awesome riffs. Then you'll rock.

Re: shadows fall, lamb of god, all that remains

There are a lot of little factors involved. from pickups to amps to the recording process. They record a clean signal directly using something like a POD and re-amp it. live, a lot of these bands play wirelessly. this has a notable effect on tone. and Willie Adler mentioned in one interview that they boost the level on the wireless receiver to get even more juice to the amp.

This one I agree with the most. That is why I'm now chasing my tone.

Re: shadows fall, lamb of god, all that remains

Here, here. What works for YOU is more important than what works for the guy who's got several grand to spend on it...and there are lots of good, affordable tube heads, OD pedals and pickups just waiting to work for you.

Re: shadows fall, lamb of god, all that remains

I say do what you want. If you want to go for that type of tone, then do it. I can say almost for sure you will find your own tone doing that, plus the original tone you were previously hunting. Thats what I did.. cant say the 6505+ is neccessarily what i was hunting, but i did find some great tones out of it. A Mark IV will give you whatever you want if you want that LoG tone, and alot more. Have fun.

Re: shadows fall, lamb of god, all that remains

hahah yeah. he sounds like he's trying to be spooky instead of just screaming until his throat is raw like proper heavy bands (CONVERGE, curl up and die, pig destroyer, etc...)

Re: shadows fall, lamb of god, all that remains

you want lamb of god tone?

plug a strat bridge pickup into 15 distortion pedals with the tone & gain dimed, then kill the bass on your amp & crank the mids, treble, and presence

Re: shadows fall, lamb of god, all that remains

The closest thing I got to lamb of god's tone was playing through a mesa mark IIb with a tubescreamer in front. I wasn't sure what tone I was going to get from that rig but the second I started playing I was like... thats LoG for sure.
