Shame! Shame! Shame!

Re: Shame! Shame! Shame!

Didn't anyone notice that the parts that are there seem to be in remarkably good shape for a guitar that looks like it's been run over by a tank?

Re: Shame! Shame! Shame!

At least it can still do what it does best...

Re: Shame! Shame! Shame!

I kinda like it the way it is. Put in some pickups, tuners, a new nut, and a fret dressing, and you'd have a LP Relic.......heavily reliced!!!

Re: Shame! Shame! Shame!

Is it me or does that guitar look like it has been saved from a fire and someone sanded some of the top down trying to save or sell it.... I swear some of the markings are fire damage...

That thing was:
1) Either in WWI, WWII, Vietname, Korea, Iraq, and in my possession (I can occasionally be a disaster but when I am...)
2) Survided ALL Mortal Kombats.

Take your pick... I want it, just can't afford it (buying and parts later)

Re: Shame! Shame! Shame!

Poor LP. I'd be all for buying a project guitar, but that thing looks like it would require far more TLC than I can give. It's in rought shape. IMO, LPs don't make great reliced guitars, so you've have to do a complete rebuild/refinish on that thing.

Does anyone else see this thread title and think of the Jefferson Starship song?

Shame you say it’s all over for you and me
There’s a time for love and a time for letting it be baby
Shame you’re playin a game
Called hard to get by it’s real name
Makin’ believe that you still don’t feel the same

Shame you’re playin a game you never can win girl
You’re stayin away just so I’ll ask you where you’ve been baby
Like a cat and a mouse (cat and a mouse)
From door to door and house to house
Don’t you pretend you don’t know what I’m talkin about

Were all those nights we spent together (hey hey)
Only because you didn’t know better
Oh jane you’re playin a game, you’re playin a game, playin a game

Shame you’re playin a game of hide and go seek
Shame you’re playin for fun but I play for keeps (yes I do)
Oh jane that’s a game on me
Oh jane that’s so plain to see
Shame! Shame! Shame!

Re: Shame! Shame! Shame!

I haven't seen this guitar (you know- firewall kinda stuff :saeek: ), but it can't have been much of any worse than my 71 Deluxe.

It was given to me by a friend who made me promise to restore it. Every bit of hardware and electronics had been stripped from it, and the finish was stripped on the top. It used to be a goldtop, from what was left of the paint inside the pickup cavities. The best part was the neck was snapped into 3 pieces. There was no repairing it. Two of the main neck pieces were still connected by the twisted truss rod. Gibson had me send it to a place called National Guitar Repair- I don't know if they're still around- and they put a new neck on it with the original serial number. I was a poor college student at the time, so I had a buddy do the finish- the color is cool, the burst isn't too bad, but it's thicker than you'd want to imagine, and it's blistered in places. It was $180. I scavenged parts from here and there and I've had the neck reshaped- it's not too bad of a guitar all things considered...

Re: Shame! Shame! Shame!

You can't polish a turd, but you can spray it silver.

I think that analogy fits here.

Re: Shame! Shame! Shame!

Why is that D string strung diferently from the others?

Re: Shame! Shame! Shame!

The E string is strung that way too! Every once in a while I play around with "wrapping over" the tailpiece- as the tailpiece was originally concieved to be used- I do it for a set of strings and then I decide to change it back to the "normal" way. I'd just broken the E and D and didn't want to waste a string when I changed, and I figured they'd break sooner if I did string them normally since there'd be a kink right around the break of the saddle. Since I go through D strings like nothing...

Re: Shame! Shame! Shame!

I can fix it. My dad's got an awesome set of tools. He's a TV repairman.

Re: Shame! Shame! Shame!

It kinda looks like it was in a fire.

Exactly..... it looks like it was in a house fire of some sort and the top was sanded down...

I have made a few strats and teles by hand i have been thinking it would be easier for me to make my own LP then try and save this one... Even though i have never done binding or the fancy Gibson inlays...
