shaving a big muff

drew_half_empty

Looking for Real Life
ok well i've looked up schematics for the russian bm pi and they seem pretty simple, but i thought it'd be cool if i could make one that has another flavor of muff in there, that's like the russian one but as smooth as humanly possible

how would i go about this? use different kinds of caps/resistors? put some LED's in the circuit? also, how does one go about making a... double pedal?

please give as much & as specific advice as you can

thanks

Re: shaving a big muff

hah thanks sky

after looking at the page it looks like i'm gonna hafta do some tinkering.

i know the LED's for at least one of the diode pairs is a good idea, and maybe the 2N3904 transistor mod. BM's always get kinda weird when you turn the gain down too low, so that sounds like a good option

what about the double pedal thing? how do you do that?

Re: shaving a big muff

You can use a 3PDT stomp switch to switch between components (one pair of diodes to another pair, and possibly one set of transistors to another set). Unfortunately due to the design of the Big Muff with 2 sets of clipping diodes and 4 sets of transistors I don't know how much of a difference that will make. Of course you can make everything switchable with multiple mini toggles or rotary switches, but that's not switch on the fly. The final solution is to use some logic chips, FETs or relays that would actually let you switch multiple tansistors/diodes at once. (I guess you might be able to find a stomp switch with more poles, but be prepared to pay for it. ;))

Re: shaving a big muff

Oh, you could actually have two boards in there and switch from one output to another with a standard stomp switch. I don't know how the J&H does it, but that would work.

Re: shaving a big muff

that'd be fine, there's like <15 parts on a bm IIRC

wouldn't the switch be on the input though & wire them both to the same output jack?

Re: shaving a big muff

I'd probably go for a hedge trimmer or a strimmer.... if it's too big a job... get a sheep shearer!!!

Sorry.... I couldn't resist! Yes I'm a prat I know 'coz I can't offer any serious advice, I wish I could... SORRY!
