I used varying grades of sandpaper for mine, from 160 grit to get through the finish, and working upwards until 600 grit. Finished with lemon oil.
You'd have to take the neck off the guitar. Any place you want to preserve the original finish, tape it off! I've got a couple of scratches on my headstock due to accidents when I was handling the sandpaper.

I used medium grit paper first to remove the finish,then extra fine then 0000 steel wool. i also do not like any finish on my neck cause it makes it feel like i am playin on plastic :laugh2:
you have to use the steel wool on it from time to time cuase it gets a grainy feelin,to clean it i use rubbing alcohol

Why don't you buy a neck reasonably cheaply (e-bay?) and also the tuners and then shave or sand that down with the various grades of sandpaper to what you want and put that in the strat. That way you don't do any damage to the guitar/neck, should you ever wish to sell it or revert back to the original neck if you overdo the sanding .
Alternatively see if you can get from Warmoth or from one of the other suppliers.

Their necks will bolt in to your guitar, you can get any neck shape that you like (v neck, boat neck, fat back), and get it unfinished! then you need to pick up some gunstock oil (linseed) and gunstock wax. This will give you that great unfinished feel, yet preserve your neck (It's what Music Man guitars are prepared with)

I bought both of these about 4 mo after I got my MM guitar, and am only about 1/3 of the way through them now. Even though with shipping it costs like $16, it lasts a long long time.

I've thought about sanding the finish off the neck of one of my Les Pauls, because it gets a real sticky feel to it. However, I've heard that some kind of neck finish is necessary to prevent warpage. Is this true?

Hey Junkie,
If your LP neck is getting sticky, try cleaning it with Naphta (lighter fluid). It should remove any buildup that makes it sticky. And it is always a good idea to have the wood sealed to some degree. At least tounge oil. Regarding sanding the neck. I used a scraper first to pull of as much of the finsih as fast as I could, and then started sanding using 200 working my way up to 2000. Then applying a light coat of oil, or finish of your choice.

if you just want a smooth neck, use a green plastic pan scourer on the back of the neck. because the plastic dosent remove any wood, just the varish, the results are smooth, to say the least
this isnt just something ive read. i do it to all my guitars

I'd tape off the the edge of the neck and very gengerly sand it with some really fine sand paper, but beware that your neck may warp I think if it gets wet or humid, etc.. The only necks I've seen that don't are wolfgang necks, but they have a Carbon Rod in them for this puprose.. I think Fender should include this in their necks as does Peavey.. I know Carvin does on their bolt on necks, and I do believe they do on their neck thru's.. I'm thinking that I might in the future by a neck thru from Carvin because of this.. as I personally believe it helps with sustain and resonance since it takes some of the string pressure off the neck ..

I think they say they will now, but they warn that it cancels the warrenty! Get a Carvin neck! They have one that has the Carbon Rod in it.. It won't do the prezel thing..hehehe.. They will ship an unfinished neck, but unless you finish it yourself once you get it, the warranty is void. Tung oil doesn't count as a finish.
