I'm actually tempted to sand the gloss finish off the back of my epiphone les paul's neck and redo it with some satin urethane.

You can get TruOil & the Birchwood-Casey Gunstock Wax at most Walmarts Just go where the guns are...

but beware that your neck may warp I think if it gets wet or humid, etc.. The only necks I've seen that don't are wolfgang necks, but they have a Carbon Rod in them for this puprose

Its been just about a year since I've stripped all finish off my RG neck. Not the first sign of warpage so far, and I'm in Hong Kong (VERY VERY humid) The thing's quartersawn, and its as stable as ever.
