Re: Shielding pickup Buzz and noise

I generally use shielding paint because I haven't had good luck with tape. I paint the pickup and control cavities with 6 coats of paint. I then run a ground wire to the output jack. Be careful with shielding paint because it is graphite based and very messy.

The first step with shielding a pickup is to desolder the cold end of the coil winding and then wrap some copper foil around the coil and solder the ends of the foil together with the wire running through it back to the solder lug. That is supposed shield the pickup. You can also shield your pickguard by spraying the underside with some spray adhesive and laying it on some aluminum foil. Then just cut away the excess.

Check out http://www.guitarnuts.com/index.php for complete descriptions. I find shielding does make a big difference but your ears can play tricks on you afterwards. You can play at higher volumes and with higher distortion without a loss of clarity.
