Shipping guitar

Any advice on shipping guitars as far as carriers and size restrictions in the U.S.? I've got a few too many and local Craigslist isn't cutting it.

Re: Shipping guitar

I've had the best luck with Fed Ex in terms of pricing, timely delivery, and them taking care of the package itself. I've had broken amps and guitars with UPS. USPS is not bad, but gets expensive past a certain point. Good luck with the sales.

Also make sure you pack the guitar properly. Always ship it in a case in a box filled with padding, in another box filled with padding. That's what I always do.

Not forgetting to use a service that requires a signature at the other end, and doesn't allow the delivery driver to dump it on a door step.

Re: Shipping guitar

Sometimes shippers will give you crap about damage insurance claims claiming you didn't pack it well enough.
You can have them pack it and they photograph the whole thing and they'll work out the claims if something happens.

And yeah, I like to float the guitar, bubble wrapped, in foam peanuts. then seal that box and float that box in a bigger box of peanuts.

If shipping a bolt on, you can save a ton by taking the neck off. Most of the shipping cost on a guitar is cuz of length on those big boxes. But always make sure the customer is OK with it, some people would prolly flip their wigs but it works fine

and always signature on delivery. Scammers will try that "I never received it" stuff and it can be hard to prove one way or the other. Don't even deal with that hassle.

Here is a Reverb video on how to pack a guitar, their "Method". It works well and is very similar to how I've always packed. The important part is that the guitar doesn't move at all in the case and that the case doesn't move around at all in the box. This helps to minimize potential breaks.

I've used USPS the most and unless your box is oversize or really heavy, I find the prices reasonable. Fed Ex would be my 2nd choice.
