Shocking bit of information about old Silverfaces

Re: Shocking bit of information about old Silverfaces

That is the plan like I said this amp was gigged hard. Blow a fuse at 11 P.M. on a Friday night gig your only option is the foil from your cigarette pack. There is some serious internal damage I just want to get the amp back to spec.

Re: Shocking bit of information about old Silverfaces

6 weeks later I got a call my amp is almost done. He wanted to know if I wanted the tremolo fixed or not. I told him I want the amp back showroom. I will most likely drive into Boston Saturday to get it. Probably do a bit of guitar shopping and pawn shop hunting while I am there.

I want to thank the op here.

I'm going to file this as "good things to know about old amps."

I hope it works out for you man.

Re: Shocking bit of information about old Silverfaces

LOL! Glad you're ok! That will make you wake up. I'm an electrican and getting zapped is no fun. It ruins your day..

He put on a new cord, new fuse holder, cleaned the tube sockets, replaced the vibrato circuit and doubled the cap value on the bright switch to allow me to pick up high mids with it. All for $100 parts and labor. I am pumped I don’t think this amp has been in this good of shape since the late 80’s. This is like a NAD for me.

Unfortunately I have had quite a bit of voltage go through me in my lifetime. You never get used to it.

Scary incident man, but glad you're ok! Nice that you were able to get it fixed too.

Look up "Fender death cap". Your answer is most likely there.

Re: Shocking bit of information about old Silverfaces

Glad you're okay. Want to hear back how you like the amp after the servicing.

Quad Reverbs were very popular amps for club guitarists back in the '70s, along with the Super Six. (I knew a guy who had a Quad with a set of JBL D-130s--I bet that rig weighed 150 lbs.!) And of course there were Twins and Showmans (same amp), and Super or Pro Reverbs, usually pushed hard. The solid state Acoustic 150+610 cab was hot rig. Music Man combos were big, especially the HD130 210 and 212--saw a lot of guys play those. And a fair number of the Ampeg V-Series (V2, V4, VT60, VT22) and the occasional SUNN, like the Concert Lead or the 1200S, and rarely a Marshall, Kustom or Peavey. The 610 cabs were really popular and a lot of manufacturers built them. I think bands played a lot louder then, and I guess everyone got tired of moving big stacks that weighed a ton. I remember doing a gig with my 120-watt SUNN Solos II 212 combo, running it on 8, and people yelling at us to turn it up. LOL!

Anymore, if I take my Mark III or Mark IV to a jam, I usually have by far the most powerful amp on stage. And I will usually have to switch to the Class A setting (15 watts) to get the best tone at such low volume. I usually prefer the headroom and dynamic tone of a more powerful amp, but there's few places where I can open it up.

The Quad Reverb is a great amp--one of my all-time favs, and I hope you get to rock it out.

(Just don't call me when you need to move it!!!!) :)

I've always heard that smoking was bad for amps.

Re: Shocking bit of information about old Silverfaces

It is back in one piece and it sounds better than it did in the 80's. There is a new matched quad of Sovtek power tubes in her and a fresh set of groove tube preamp and reverb tubes. I can't get over how good this amp sounds. I haven't even plugged a box in it yet just digging the natural breakup, reverb, tremolo and amazing cleans.

Re: Shocking bit of information about old Silverfaces

I had a little mod done to the amp while it was in the shop based on the tech's recommendation. Obviously Fenders are bright amps so I always found it useless to have a bright switch on it. My tech added a second 120pf cap to the switch in effect doubling it and allowing more mids to pass when the switch is enacted. The mids really pop now. This gives a very full rich tone to the amp. For the first time in my life I think the amp sounds better with the bright switch on. If you don't use the bright switch on your amp I would suggest doing this mod. You just might dig a couple more useable tones out of the amp for the price of a cap.

That is an awesome idea! I think I keep mine on (Hot Rod Deluxe) but I've adjust both my pedals and the Amp (Bass, Mid, Treb) to it. Thanks for the tip!

I'll think about it. The normal channel on my Bassman is just a bit too mid scooped that I just end up using the bass channel with the deep switch engaged, treble at 10, bass at 0. Gets really mid heavy, with enough low end around 150 Hz for guitar. Lots of low mids, middle mids, and high mids going on there.
