Shop floor custom?

I'm not too crazy about the bridge mini humbucker in my SG, it squeels a little too much for my tastes but I don't want to mess with it because of resale value. Also it sounds great, vintage, smooth and fat tone but a little bright maybe.

Looking around I think the higher output SM-3 will be a great replacement. Still vintage sounding but fatter and hotter. I'm worried about the high bass rating though...8 seems a bit much. Or does this make up for the lot's of high end mini buckers have?

BUT, I would like the same looks as the old one which has a black (plastic) cover and adustable polepieces.

So since it's only a cosmetic difference from the standard pup, can I order the mini bucker as a shop floor custom?
Can such a thing be ordered from Europe or is it USA only? (like the 21 day policy)

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I don't believe there are too many cosmetic options with the SM series. They use rails rather than pole pieces, so adjustable pole pieces are out. Also, I am reasonably certain that the metal cover is an integral part of the construction of the pickup (it holds it together) so you probably can't get a black plastic one for it.

Re: Shop floor custom?

I've always wondered what exactly constitutes a floor shop custom.

hmmm ... I'll have to start another thread. :)

Re: Shop floor custom?

a Shop Floor Custom can be changed a bit but not too much and you can't mess with the actual wind at all...example

Luke duke had a Broadcaster with Alnico II magnets, that was a SFC you could order a Jazz, A2P, Seth, or even an Ant as a trembucker as a SFC, you could order a JB non potted or a Seth potted as a SFC but if you wanted a 12k 59 or an 8k invadde those would be full on custom shop orders...

As for the SM series are NOT Mini humbuckers like in a LP Deluxe or in your SG...they are Firebird Pickups and do not even have polepieces...they are blades unde those covers...you could look into Antioquity Mini's as they are the same style pickup you have in your Sg.

FWIW, DiMarzio make P-90 styled versions of the Super Distortion and the Tone Zone that would be a direct replacement for a mini-bucker...

Re: Shop floor custom?

"Shop Floor Customs" are one of the most cool things about Seymour-Duncan!

I got a set of Seth Lovers with 4 conductor wire for coil splits and one magnet flipped so that the slug coils will be humcancelling when combined (same for screw coils).

Also got a RW/RP Jerry Donahue bridge to get humcancelling when combined with another neck pup.

Couldn't get a steel plate under a Quarter Pound for Strat though, but somebody (Butch?) told me the Custom Shop did that.

Don't know exactly where the line is between "Shop Floor Custom" and Custom Shop...

Re: Shop floor custom?

Sorry if off topic, but will one of those DImarzio P-90s fit in a guitar that takes a Dog Eared P-90? I bought KAC's Epi Sg Junior and want to ditch the P-90 for a Dimarzio Super Distortion P-90 or an EMG P-81/P-91. I guess I can just drill 6 holes in the dog ear collar or just take off the collar and mount directly into the wood like a P-90 normally fits right?

Re: Shop floor custom?

Ok, thanks for clearing that up guys.
I just asumed the SM were direct replacements with a funky cover. I'd like to stick to more conventional looks.
Not too many guys who use minibuckers out there? I don't seem to have a lot of options regarding replacement pickups. Or I'm not looking hard enough, lol.

I'll check out the Dimarzio's & the antiquities look nice too! But I'll start another topic about those.

Maybe Evan can (re)explain it better than me, but I think the rule of thumb is that it's:

a) Where the coil specs (e.g., DC resistance, pattern, wire guage and insulation) are no different from the stock pickup, and;

b) Beyond that, anything they can make that isn't enough of a hassle for them to charge extra for;

EXAMPLE: Lew was looking for a trem-spaced Jazz neck model which Duncan doesn't. However, all that needs to be done is to use parts that Duncan already has on hand, in this case a trem-spaced base plate and trem-spaced bobbins. Everything else is identical, so no extra charge.

Other examples:

1) Someone mentioned 4-conductor on models that are 2-conductor stock;

2) You can order a model with a cover that normally doesn't come stock with a cover.

Some I'm not sure about:

3) Maybe you could request that a pickup that's normally potted be unpotted.

4) You can definitely get a double cream pickup but it has to come with a cover due to the DiMarzio thing -- BUT, I don't know if they charge extra for that or not.

Re: Shop floor custom?

Can you get a double cream shop floor custom? What do they cost anyway?

Re: Shop floor custom?
