Re: Shopping advice for a new recording laptop?

Are you going to use the bundled software with the Focusrite [ Protools/Ableton etc ] or something else ? Or other progs/apps as well ?

Re: Shopping advice for a new recording laptop?

No idea. I might use a 4-track cassette recorder. Like a Tascam from 1992.

Edit: Maybe Pro Tools First? It came with the interface.

I’ve already ordered my first of two memory sticks, to take the computer to 16 GB. The second will follow later this year; I’ll be at 32 GB.

If you have external sound card then processing is minimal (maybe some plugins).
I used an old VAIO (from 2012) and hadn't got any problems doing live audio+video recording at the same time.
As long as of course the kernel supports low latency.

I use Orville Redenbacher’s.

Re: Shopping advice for a new recording laptop?

Did I ever get that new computer up and running?

Re: Shopping advice for a new recording laptop?

Have you turned it on yet ?:dot:

Yeah. So far, I have:

  • Uninstalled the factory anti-virus and installed one of my BitDefender seats.
  • Uninstalled some things I won’t use.
  • Ran updates for OS.
  • Upgraded RAM to 16 GB.

So you've accelerated the RAM upgrade..

Correction on the RAM upgrade. It’s 16 GB.

Re: Shopping advice for a new recording laptop?

Are you kidding?

Re: Shopping advice for a new recording laptop?

This is going to sound incredible stupid, but once you get the DAW up and running and plug in the Focusrite, make sure you go into the Preferences and check to see that the Focusrite is your input device. And also, turn on the monitoring within the DAW so you can hear yourself playing through the speakers of your computer or your studio monitors.

Re: Shopping advice for a new recording laptop?

You shouldn't have any issues with the single SSD drive, but if it has a bay, wouldn't hurt to have a 2nd drive just for audio. Run your programs on the main C drive and have it record all the audio to the other drive, put all your samples, etc... on that drive too.
