Re: Shopping advice for a new recording laptop?

That is a 'general rule' many people follow. I haven't done any tests myself on the matter though. With that said, I have an active box but all my guitars/ bass have passive pickups.

With anything in the recording world, it's all about what sounds best for that application.

Re: Shopping advice for a new recording laptop?

I’m going to try setting my computer up for audio this weekend.

If your guitar tone is clean and phasey, funky, scooped, or Mark Knopflered, -Using a DI is preferred in many cases over an amp -especially Single Coils

Listen to any classic Curtis Mayfield for example -all that Guitar is a phantom powered DI straight into the console.

I’ll keep that in mind. Sometimes I use Strats with scooped singlecoil tones.

It kinda depends what pre-amp is in the console and how the signal is processed.

*Most* recorded guitar is actually either micced or through plug ins through an interface. I don't *think* DI is done that much. Unless you are referring to DI as through an interface and plug ins. I would venture to say that there is a lot more digital recording with plug ins than people think.

Re: Shopping advice for a new recording laptop?

I probably don’t want to run amp sim plug-ins all the time. I should have bought a Power Mac if I wanted to do that.

I sound exactly like Curtis Mayfield.

Good point -Probably should have clarified my comment -by DI -I mean converting the output signal of a guitar to line level (and before a ADC of course) without the use of an amp and Mic and Mic Preamp etc. Either by an external box or interface. I prefer old external DI -Modern Interfaces tend to have less than stellar interaction directly with guitar pickups. Mayfield like so many Motown/Soul/Blues/Funk players were using late 60s UTC DI boxes straight into preferred RCA, NEVE and later SoundCraft consoles -how do I know? I have 2 UTC boxes he gave me when I was young.

Re: Shopping advice for a new recording laptop?

Curtis Mayfield never gave me any DI boxes.
