Shopping for a cheap but decent bass guitar

Re: Shopping for a cheap but decent bass guitar

^^ As stated I´ve played a few over the years, and not just models w/floyds.

To me they just don´t feel "solid", but more like a toy... And that´s what made me shudder at the idea of them having an even cheaper line ;)

Re: Shopping for a cheap but decent bass guitar

Dunno man, to me they always felt like solid solid axes with great necks that happened to (most of the time) come with crappy electronics and hardware (but for the price I REALLY can't complain...)

The only reason really that I don't get a K-1 I've had my eye on for almost a year is that I already have 4 superstrats, no LP (and I do have a Michael Kelly Patriot on layaway) and nowhere near skill nor space enough to justify another purchase...

Re: Shopping for a cheap but decent bass guitar

^^ Unfortunately for me things like how the electronics feel and work strongly contribute to my impression of an electric... things like smooth but deliberate knob turning as opposed to practically free spinning and wobbly for example.

I just don´t like feeling like I´m buying a new guitar that I´ll definitely have to upgrade, I´d rather spend that money on a better guitar from the get go ;)

SQUIER 70's MODIFIED JAZZ ALL MAPLE

For the price it is the best bass I have come across. My bro has one of these along with an SX P-bass and 5 string jazz. The SX are also good for the money but the Squier blows them out of the water.

We tried out all the basses in the local shop the day he bought it. It sounded better than an $800 LTD, all the Ibanezes and many others. They didn't have any American Fenders so we couldn't compare, but they did have a maple fretted ESP and it had a similar tone.

The ESP was the better bass for sure but man for the price its close enough.

Re: Shopping for a cheap but decent bass guitar

Shouldn't be any problems dropping Duncans into a Fender shaped bass. I'd say it's safe, plenty of bassists who use fenders replace the pickups with Basslines and some Squier basses come with Duncan Designed pups.

I can understand that. Me myself I'm still kinda in mod-mode so I would actually expect to replace all the electronics and maybe some of the hardware with my personal preferences anyway (like push/pulls for splitting for instance or locking tuners which for me are a must)

i just played one of these yesterday at the store, as well as the squier vm fretless jazz. both felt and played very solid, really fun basses

Re: Shopping for a cheap but decent bass guitar

Got me a Indonesian PBass , it is by far one heck of a deal for deee moneeee IMHO .

They have cosmetic issues but nothing a little elbow grease can't solve . I had to fix stripped out pick guard screw holes , fix a jack adjust the neck and harmonics and wow , zip , bang I had myself a great looking , sounding and most of all a good low action'd easy playing bass guitar I got from a frustrated dude who could not do what I figured out and fixed in a few days . For this I paid $80.00 cash . It looks brand spankin new too !

Re: Shopping for a cheap but decent bass guitar

MX Fender Jazz bass or P bass is your best bet...on ebay. Then put in some hot pickups and beef up the electronics, maybe a meaty Badass II bridge, and go completely crazy and put on hipshot tuners and a drop D..........Or leave it stock depending on how often you play and what you want out of it.......either way have fun

Re: Shopping for a cheap but decent bass guitar

G&L Tribute J bass... excellent.

+1 on G&L. I've never played the tribute series, But I'm lead to believe that they are built, Sound and play as good as the originals? (i.e.) Built to Leo's specs I own a 1980 L-1000 ( lawsuit headstock model) in a nut shell, It's a P-Bass redesigned by Leo 40 years after he invented the electric bass with 40 years of innovations. Arguably the best production bass ever made?:naughty:
