and then..... SERVICE CALL ... ARG!
But I was able to shoot 5 coats in spite of it.

Re: Shot some finish today !

The face and back are book matched Koa. Between them is Red Wood, Maple, Red Wood. The upper and lower halves are separated by a strip of Bocote.
I'm shooting Grafted Coatings KTM-9 from LMI. It is crystal clear.

Koa is THE wood IMHO... nothing better on the planet. Very interesting looking guitar, the wood is gorgeous!!

Re: Shot some finish today !

Thank you every one.
The neck is VG/quarter sawn Maple with a 24 fret Bocote FB.
It will have a 78 Trembucker with 4 conductor cable in the bridge, and a tapped Quarter Pound Neck in the neck.
What it will sound like? We will see.
The plan is to have it completed in time to show it at the Northwest Handmade Instrument Exhibit at Marylhurst University in Portland Oregon, April 25-26.
I don't have a table, but I will be there for a bit to show it to a number of people I know, and any one else that would like to see it.
Next year I will have a table and several guitars of a few models to show.
Well I got to get back at it. Got some drop filling and sanding to do, then some more coats!

Once again, Thanks, John

Re: Shot some finish today !

I had to do a lot of drop filling on it yesterday to start. Then do to my inexperience with water born finishes, not having used a spray gun in 14 years, and having never used an HVLP spray gun before, the the first application of coats was not very consistent.
I sanded through in quite a few spots. Oops!
The second application of coats yesterday was much better. Almost no sags, and looks much more consistent. Still had to do some more drop filling, but only about 20 spots. Am going to sand it back a bit and do 4 or 5 more coats today.
Here it is, after the second go around of spraying yesterday and the drop filling I did a little bit ago.

Re: Shot some finish today !

Looking awesome! Waterbornes are a PIA to work with, but nice because they stay crystal clear. Can't tell from the photo that you feel "out of practice!"

Feeling a little jealous!

Yep, if you pour filling isn't perfect you will know right away. Water born finishes do not like to bridge gaps!
Thankfully you can drop fill those spots with CA before you do a lite sanding/leveling on it in prep to the next set of coats.
Some of the problems were do to using a cheep Harbor Freight gun. I had to do a lot of work to it to clean all the crap out of it and make it so it didn't leak. Then the fan/spray pattern wasn't even. It was putting out more finish on one side then the other. I was able to make it better by gently chamfering the side impinging air holes in the tip using small drill bits. The pattern still isn't what it should be but it is better.
Also, I was shooting outside under the back porch area, with it cloudy and raining at times. It was hard to see what I was doing. LOL
Yesterday I did some more drop filling, a light sanding, then 5 coats. It is looking much better.
Now to wait 2 weeks, then sand and buff.
