You tell me. I like a good compressed super tight tone that is nice n middy, think Venturia or Circus Maximus(check myspace for em). Should I start savin for one? I like the Attax mucho grande but I'm GASin for a 5150.

Re: Should I get a 5150?

"Aye!"

I thinkn the 5150 is in the tonal range you're describing one. I was considering one not long ago, but I am not much into high gain anymore, and to my ears it was a bit overly compressed.

Great amps though! Take the dive... go tube!

Re: Should I get a 5150?

i don't think the 5150 is that tight by nature but definitely middy and compressed. But for what you're describing and the fact that your clips show that you also play bluesy stuff and such you owe it to yourself to try at least one Engl. If you want a head you might really like the blackmore.

I aint rich. A 5150 is pushin it moneywise.

Re: Should I get a 5150?

Go for it dude! Sounds like it's what you want. I see some good deals on ebay for them. I got mine a few years ago off of ebay (I have the 5150 II btw) and I dig it.

Re: Should I get a 5150?

If you like to go from sorta clean-blusey high gain-death metal, a 5150 will serve you well.

If you want a brighter, less compressed, and cleaner 5150, get the 5150II.

Ah,sorry i forgot about the price difference in the US. A used blackmore and a used 5150 are about the same price here in germany. Even if it's probably very rare in the US a used Engl Screamer 50 head might also be a great choice and should be considerably cheaper than the blackmore.

Re: Should I get a 5150?

Jeff Dunne sure seems to know his way around the 5150s, maybe you should wait for him to chime in.

If it needs to be tighter, just put a good OD(OD808,TS9,ect.) in front of the gain channel to tighten things up.

Go for it, 5150s are rippin' amps!

Re: Should I get a 5150?

5150, "Aye" If you need tighter and in the same price range, the Triple X is a slightly different flavor but it is a little more "aggressive" so its a trade off.

Re: Should I get a 5150?

Having owned three myself, and having praised these amps so highly...

I wouldn't get one.

I don't care what people say - the clean channel is absolute ****... because there is no clean channel. It's sterile, lifeless, bland, has no depth - it really just sucks.

The distortion channel is great, and I'll never deny that. Unfortunately, it's such a one trick pony, it can get really, really honky if you don't keep your mids in check, and it's been used by so many bands that the sound is just becoming overused and trite.

Now... a tighter, more versatile 5150 with a much warmer, more responsive feel, great clean channel, and two gain channels...

That's what finally came in today.

Re: Should I get a 5150?

Whats a normal price for one of those, i saw one for around 600 at a pawn shop, i wasnt all that interested because i was looking for an electric guitar at the time and didnt have any use for an amp.

Re: Should I get a 5150?

5150's go for 650-800 depending on condition, the II's for about 50 higher.

It's sad, you can get a better condition 6505 on eBay for a better price than a beat to **** 5150.

Re: Should I get a 5150?

I've never regretted my 5150... not even once... It is the amp i love the most in my collection... I use mine for ZZTOP like blues all the time!!!

I have a friend with a JSX and the thing sounded really scratchy n dry. Really don't know how to explane it, because I'd never heard it before! Can't say I was too impressed with it. I would look into it and try one out but it costs another 200 more which I just don't have. I'm still kickin around the 5150 because it's affordable. I don't use cleans often enough for it to matter and my current clean is great but only because I have as single coil in the neck. So cleans I'm not worried about. My question is, I will be going for the cheapest 5150 I can find....what model is that and is there a better model?
