Re: Should I get a 5150?

You tell me. I like a good compressed super tight tone that is nice n middy, think Venturia or Circus Maximus(check myspace for em). Should I start savin for one? I like the Attax mucho grande but I'm GASin for a 5150.

Are you stupid or something? You have an Attax man! :D

Re: Should I get a 5150?

I have a friend with a JSX and the thing sounded really scratchy n dry. Really don't know how to explane it, because I'd never heard it before! Can't say I was too impressed with it. I would look into it and try one out but it costs another 200 more which I just don't have. I'm still kickin around the 5150 because it's affordable. I don't use cleans often enough for it to matter and my current clean is great but only because I have as single coil in the neck. So cleans I'm not worried about. My question is, I will be going for the cheapest 5150 I can find....what model is that and is there a better model?

The JSX is pretty picky about cabinets, and it definitely sounds much, much smoother with a pair of 6L6's in it.

The bog standard 5150 with the signature logo is what's going to be cheapest, I'd say. I'd try to swing a 6505, simply because it'll be in way better condition, but it's up to you.

Just know that despite what people claim, there is absolutely no difference between the EVH blockletter logo and the signature logo heads - they shipped from the factory with different tubes, and that's it.

Re: Should I get a 5150?

If it needs to be tighter, just put a good OD(OD808,TS9,ect.) in front of the gain channel to tighten things up.

Go for it, 5150s are rippin' amps!

Yeah but with a ENGL you wouldnt even need a pedal infront of it to tighten it up.

Like Loserchief said, try a ENGL. I have the Screamer model, and it is one of the best amps I have heard.

A 5150 is METAL!

A Screamer is METAL, rock, blues and jazz in one package.

Last night, I cranked it with low gain, and plugged me Strat into it, and cranked out "Hells Bells" and it sounded killer... Then the Charvel, where I play ed Creeping Death, and it sounded great as well.

Try one bro.

Re: Should I get a 5150?

i'd stay with the original 5150 or 6505's.... the II versions i have heard the tone is slightly different, drier sounding.. still good, but the original design version is what most 5150/6505 fans love....

The amps are extremely heavy to lug so keep that in mind... but once you feel the tone of these monster's you will not mind lugging them... I used to use my 5150 head thru my Marshall 1x12 in clubs, a 1912 model cab... the 5150 cab is amazing but too boomy for most small stages.... but the outdoor gigs i did with that band the 5150 cab was amazing!

i like the 5150 so much i am on the hunt to find a 2nd one as back up... 5150 or 6505 don't matter to me... but i'll stick with the original design version

If you're half way decent and your guitars are at least some what versatile, a 5150 can pull off what ever you need to...

Some people forget there's more to a 5150 than the lead channel. Try cranking the rythym channel way way up some time.

not to trash a good amp, but the 5150 is a one-trick-pony in purest form. it excels at High gain but everything else is kinda bland and boring sounding(i tried it with my own DR-7 and that guitar can pull of everything from jezz to death metal). I seriously considered buying a 5150 2x12 Combo but then i tried one and it lacked the versatillity to really impress me, so i got my Engl Sovereign, and while not as much of a gain monster as the 5150 it blew it away on everything else because all the channels and modes are very tonefull.

The 5150 is great but just for one style of playing, with the four channel Engls like the Screamer you have way more different tones. It's a matter of preference. For what i've heard Jacob play a Screamer would kick way more ass than a 5150 and if he kind find one at a decent price it should be great(maybe find a combo version and just hook it up to a cab)

Sure it sounds okay for other stuff.. But have you ever tried a ENGL or something with a proper clean channel? Now THATS versatility.

One thing is an amp pulling it off, another thing is when the amp sounds killer doing it.

Btw. Thanks loserchief for that bro ;) ENGL rocks.

Re: Should I get a 5150?

What about a Laney TT?
Or Engl Fireball?Great amps for great prices.
Dude you are young and a hard earning guy!So just pick an amp that delivers ,and will deliver the goods for a while.
Ask yourself why so much good priced 5150's are on the market! And such few other amps
well two reasons.
1)They sound awesome
2)but nobody wants to keep just 1 good tone!
You can try some Laney GH50/100 or the TT50/100 wich are mostly very good in tone and well priced even new.
Engl is the machine what you're looking for.Open your eyes and ears. You can find some with a good price.
And if money is the matter (it's mostly) ,hurry is not the best option.Take your time and look around!

Re: Should I get a 5150?

If the 5150 plays what you need, get it.

I have had the same experience as others have stated: It's one-dimensional.

I'd suggest finding a vintange Traynor.

An engl costs more than my car.

A 5150 is $600.

I don't expect a $600 amp to keep up with a very expensive botique amp.

Lol does your car cost 1000bucks?

As said before, if he checks Ebay and such, he might find a scoop in Germany or in USA.

One of them does, my other is considerably more expensive.

When I think of engl I usually think something for around $3000-$4000. And yes, I don't have much experence with engl, they're not that easy to find at the local botique guitar shops here.

Orange, bogner, (upper end) mesa, and VHT are WAY more affordable and easy to find here. Any time I see an engl some place it has some insane sky high price. And sure you can buy online... How many people do that though, most people want to try before they buy.

You pay that for a ENGL? The Special Edition is 3500 here I think..

My Screamer is about 1350 USD

No, no, and no.

ENGL's typicall run from 1000-2500, new. The have the Invader and SE model that get up to about 3500, but you can get every amp that they sell on eBay for 800-2000 - far less than you'll pay for a Bogner, the same as upper end Mesa, the same as VHT, and probably about the same as a nice Orange.

I know on ebay they go reasonably, I'm talking about locally.

The only store that can get them sells them before they hit the showroom floor. And they go for a hell of a lot more than you'll see on ebay.
