Ive been getting some pretty good hard rock tones outa my ENGL lately so im actually learning its ropes a bit i think. But i know that for my lead tone i really love and want something along the lines of Justins lead tone from the darkness. Since he uses a boss turbo distortion in front of a marshall jcm800 212 combo i was thinking that i could get something not the same (cos that just wouldnt be original now would it ;) ) but along those saturated lines that i love so much if i put one of those same pedals in front of my ENGL on one of its channels.

What do you guys think?

Will the tubescreamer give me that thick saturated sound?

A tube screamer is going to give you a sweet compressed tone good for blues and classic rock..This isn't the right pedal for higher gain thick saturated tone...I'm thinking more on the lines of a Metal Zone..;)

No votes for the boss turbo distortion? Justin from the darkness uses this in front of his marshall and gets a pretty sweet thick saturated lead tone.

Angus seems to be talking about putting a distortion pedal in front of an amp with some gain dialed in already. A metal zone is NOT what you want there. Vai uses a DS-1 as does/did Satriani. I think one of those or perhaps even an SD-1 are good calls if you want boss products. The tube screamer has a different vibe but could work as well depending on your tastes in gain. I use a Reverend Drivetrain myself

I use my Boss MT-2 as a boost for my JCM800. I back way off on the distortion, and it gives the amp that extra umph. Some of us love the Metal Zone, while others hate it. It's all subjective really.

Vai and Satch use the Rob Keeley modded DS-1. I own one and personally I have to say that it's one of the two best distortion pedals I've ever used. ;)

I'd suggest looking into the Keeley modded Boss stuff.

Hmm, might try the plain old OD-3. It tends to reside on the harder side of overdrive sounds. Check it out - I can't say what it'd be like in front of your ENGL - in front of my fender deluxe it kicks up some dirt, but seems a little inappropriate! :)

My favorite is the Boss DS-1...as used by Joe Satriani and Steve Vai and countless other rockers who use/used Marshalls.

They set the DS-1 up for a great lead tone when the guitar's volume control is on 10 and for a clear tone when the guitar's volume is on 5. That's the way to use a DS-1, IMO.

Once you get it set up right, you can just leave it on all the time and use your guitar's volume control to go from clean to scream.

I like the SD-1's and TS varieties with strats, and the DS-1 with a tele.
SD97's mod is an affordable route for something a little custom.

I assume that you mean the tubescreamer through a clean channel, cause whaen I put the TS9DX (set on original ts9) in front of DSL 401 overdrive 2 channel with the gain at about 11 o clock and the level (not drive) all the way up on the tubescreamer I was gettin killer heavy tones!
