Should i get a boss distortion pedal...which one?

Re: Should i get a boss distortion pedal...which one?

Check out Robert Keeley, he has a Boss Keeley Ultra Mod DS-1 and this pedal is just awesome. As used by Vai

Does anyone actually have proof that satch and vai USE keeley's modded ds-1? I know that the keeley site says that a couple modded ds-1's found their way to them, but do they actually use them onstage? Particularly in the case of satch, where he has a ds-1 onstage, but is it keeley's?

I only ask because so many people praise the fact that satch and vai use the keeley mod, moreso than the actual pedal itself.

If you go to Robert Keeley's website and poke around you'll see a whole section dedicated to the mod he did to Steve Vai's DS-1. It's hard to miss.

Aside from Vai using Keeley Ultra Mod pedal, this pedal just rocks! Sustain for days, leads are just creamy smooth and the distortion is crystal clear. You will find no mud from this pedal. All I know is that Vai uses this pedal and he sent Joe a pedal to but I don`t know if Joe uses it or not. Can`t prove any of this though.

I have the whole scoop on the Ultra Mods...I have some different ideas on this mod also...I also have the drawings for the SEM and much prefer his Ultra Mod over the SEM...Keeley is a great guy and I've spent time on the phone with him because after trying his SEM mod on my own DS1,I offered some changes and advice to him on it..I thought the SEM made the DS1 a bit too buzzy over notes and I didn't like LED distortion over the stock silicon diode tone...I take other people's mods into consideration after listening to them and then tweak further to suit my own tastes....Keeley offers some great products..

There's a few good shots of what is clearly Keeley's DS-1 in Vai's pedalboard in the Live at the Astoria DVD (about midway thru "Animal" is an extreme CU of the pedal) and I dunno about Satch's usage of it because he's got that new amp out.

So you're recommending a DS-1 over the turbo distortion pedal?

I'm recommending Keeley stuff in general. Everyone hears sound differently so it's best to try stuff out and see what you like.

Keeley also makes a modded MT2, by the way. :headbang:

Re: Should i get a boss distortion pedal...which one?

my band actually covers the darkness in our set list :)

i mostly use a DS-1 for rhythmn (pardon spelling) and click on the Compressor/Sustainor with levels real high for the leads.. works great for me
