i been saving and im am about to sell some stuff to get me a tube amp , since a long time i been wanting a a mesa single recto 50 watts head and cab but i think is gonna be too much for my room so which amp is gonna give me that same sound on a combo?? btw combo's are way cheaper i was looking at jcm800 2x12 combo for about $700 bucks , would the marshall be a good option ? or i have to stick to mesa to get that lamb of god distortion!!!!!!!!! any help would be greatly appreciated

I would just get what sounds better for you. I don't really care about cranking my 100 watt head really loud, even though I would like to, but tone is good enough for me right now. I think with jcm 800 distortion is less unless you use a distortion pedal. Your definition on the amount of distortion you use might help to lead to some suggestions on jcm 800 combos for you.

If it were me, I would first try to decide what tone I like better because the Marshall and the Mesa sound way different. One nice thing about the Mesa is that you can swap out the 6L6's for EL-34's.

I don't know what your living situation is, but realize that, in the opinion of many, a Mesa really needs to be cranked a bit to sound good.

Are you playing gigs? If not I'd say go with a combo. Either way if you're going for a high powered amp like the ones you mentioned...you're going to need an attenuator to get the sound those amps are known for.

If you need more gain than what's on tap on a JCM 800 then IMHO it doesn't really matter what amp you get.

He means its too loud. If I were you I'd spend my money on a rectifier rack preamp and use that with some small SS amp w/ a line in until you can afford a good poweramp and 2x12 cab for it. If you wanna stay Mesa I'd look at the 2:50 for a poweramp and a 2x12 recto cab for the speaker cab. I've heard great things about the rectifier recording amp and it would get you as close to the tones you're going to get without throwing some fx in there with it.

he's talking about the syndrome where (mostly metal kids) Feel the need to get the biggest amp, blackest guitar with floyd rose they'll never use and 47 different switches.

Find an amp you like first, try a bunch out. Lamb of god uses a mesa boogie mark IV and they are quite pricey. For what you're looking for I'd recommend a modeling amp like a line6 flextone III. You can get tons of sounds out of that, including hard and heavy.

Oh, and don't think you need a rectifier series amp to get crushing tone. The F series and Mark series by mesa are great too. Check out peavey 5150's (6505) also.

Mesa F-30 might be a good idea.

You're gonna want a mesa to get a good LoG sound probably...

If you play metal, you want a head/closed back cab. You also don't want a blues toned amp, because you'll always be trying to squeeze more gain out of it.

If you had a commercial rehearsal space and were competing with a hard hitting drummer every night, I'd say "get a Marshall, Mesa, Peavey, Soldano type tube halfstack."

If you'll be using it as a home amp that needs to be quiet enough to use at home and loud enough to bring to a rehearsal space, you'd be best off getting a Flextone II head,
L6 HD147, Vox Valvetronix AD60/120 head, or rack setup w/reasonable power amp.
Then, get whatever 2-12 or 4-12 cab you can afford.

All those rigs will allow you to get tight and heavy tones at low volume and high volume. You'll also have an onboard tuner, FX, headphone and recording outs.
You'll be glad you went that route, rather than trying to tame a 50 or 100W tube beast, and having an amp that you're using below it's potential.

I like mine, but I have the opportunity to crank it up when I play during the day. If you live in an apartment or don't have the house to yourself, it may be a little harder to crank it up on a regular basis. In the scheme of things, 50 watts is a ton of volume. In other words, 50 watts will get really loud and you may not be able to push the power tubes without bothering all of the neighbors, and I mean all of the neighbors.

If you gig regularly, you may want a 50 watt amp, or maybe even more dependent upon the venues that you play. If you don't gig, I would be pretty hard-pressed to pass up the Line 6 stuff. It sounds great at low volumes.

I'd get a modeling amp like a line 6 or maybe even a regular floor pedal modeler multifx thing. If you aren't playing gigs at the moment you don't really *need* an amp. It'll save you some money and some bitching from your dad!
