In the scheme of things, 50 watts is a ton of volume. In other words, 50 watts will get really loud and you may not be able to push the power tubes without bothering all of the neighbors, and I mean all of the neighbors.

No kidding around here, he's for real. My amp, running in class A mode (in which it pushes about 30 watts MAX), filled a venue holding 200-300 people through my 2x12" cabinet. It was NOT miced into the PA, just running stand alone, and I had absolutely no trouble being heard anywhere in the room. Trust me, I checked before the show :laugh2:.

One comparison I've always heard is that 5 watts is along the lines of someone playing a trumpet in your room. Pretty loud right there!

If you play metal, you want a head/closed back cab. You also don't want a blues toned amp, because you'll always be trying to squeeze more gain out of it.

If you had a commercial rehearsal space and were competing with a hard hitting drummer every night, I'd say "get a Marshall, Mesa, Peavey, Soldano type tube halfstack."

If you'll be using it as a home amp that needs to be quiet enough to use at home and loud enough to bring to a rehearsal space, you'd be best off getting a Flextone II head,
L6 HD147, Vox Valvetronix AD60/120 head, or rack setup w/reasonable power amp.
Then, get whatever 2-12 or 4-12 cab you can afford.

All those rigs will allow you to get tight and heavy tones at low volume and high volume. You'll also have an onboard tuner, FX, headphone and recording outs.
You'll be glad you went that route, rather than trying to tame a 50 or 100W tube beast, and having an amp that you're using below it's potential.

This is excellent advice. Do as he says. :)

Re: should i get a half stack or a combo??

OH, I nearly forgot. The Line 6 hd147 head rocks. It has a lot of really nice high gain settings and sounds good at low volumes too. I think you might like that. it's 300 watt, but it's solid state so it doesn't work like a tube amp. It sounds full and nice at low volume with a lot of headroom.

I think you should try some amps at your local guitar store and see if tones you get from 50w tube amps at the volume your going to play at is any good. If it is good, then I would get a tube amp. I actually have 100w tube amp in my dorm room and I don't really care if the volume is around 2. It still sounds better than ss amps. Just follow what your ears say. Getting a tube amp now might help you later when your gigging or for what ever so you don't need to get one later and sell the ss amp, some guys here are suggesting.
