I got offered a mid 70's Thomas Organ Crybaby in a trade today. He's going to give me that and cash for a pedal of mine, but he's basically valuing the wah at $70 - pretty good even for a new wah. I'm waiting on a reply about whether the pot or switch are unnecessarily noisy, but he said there's nothing wrong with it. It appears to have the stack of dimes conductor:
However, the bottom plate said it was made in Sepulveda, not Chicago, and I've heard that they switched completely to the TKL inductor after they moved production to CA. Any truth to that? I'm not so much worried about the collectiablity (more on that in a second) I'm just more interested in whether or not the wah has already been modified.
I plan to do at least a few mods to this. I want to give it true bypass and an LED, and I'm probably going to do that with a clickless relay bypass, just because I freaking love clickless switches, and it will probably make the wah even easier to turn on and off. And an LED because, well why the hell not? I'd also get a new pot if necessary, but hopefully it wouldn't be.
I've heard that switching out the transistors for higher gain variants would make the tone more pleasing to me. I also plan to modify the circuit if necessary. I'd be particularly interested in adding some external knobs, particularly a q knob and adjustments to the bass and treble content. However, if it sounds great when it comes to me I wouldn't need to do any of that.
So I guess what I'm wondering is this - is it worth it? For more or less $70, I don't see how I can go wrong, but I've also never owned or even played an old wah pedal. Any opinions?
