Should I trade my EVH LBX II for an Orange Dark Terror?

Got a trade offer for my EVH. I like my EVH LBX II, but it *needs* a boost to get there. Once I boost it, it sounds nice, but not quite as nice as my unboosted LBX 1. They sound pretty similar at this point, it's just the LBX II sounds ever-so-slightly worse. Well, not "worse", not just as chunky yet tight and aggressive as the LBX 1.

But I really like its clean channnel! But I rarely use cleans, LOL.

I've always been curious about the Dark Terror. But I don't want to make the trade if I get a "worse" amp. The LBX II doesn't sound bad, but I feel the LBX 1 does what I want it to do better. I wonder if the Dark Terror would be different enough yet "as good" at what it does as the LBX 1 (or even the LBX II).

For reference, I like a big bottom-end with aggressive high mids and scooped lower mids for added clarity and tightness. Will the Dark Terror do that? I assume I'm going to have to boost it since the Orange tone is kinda fuzzy/wooly, but if I get a different flavor, it might be worth it.

What do you guys think?

I want a LBX I. I had the Jim Root Terror for a while. I think it's my favorite of the Terror's but the Dark Terror is cool too, lots of Orange character.

It really does come down to whether or not you like the Orange sound. I would absolutely do the trade if it were me. If you rarely use the clean on the II and have to boost to get it close to what you like about the lbx I, it'd at least be a different sound from the EVH's at very least. Even if you have to boost it as well, you have a different sound, so for me it'd be a pretty easy choice.

Good luck!

Then add a depth finder in the fx loop and you'll have res/pres. I have had all forms of the Dark Terror, and the original is still my favorite. I just traded the 100w Dual Dark for a CornFord but my Dark Terror stays put. And I have 5153...gave it to my son after I discovered the depth finder.

Is it so much trouble to boost your amp that you're willing to trade it away? Sounds like you have a good thing going, and if that's the case, I sure wouldn't trade it away unless it's a redundant piece of gear that you just don't need.

If you can spend time with both side-by-side, that's ideal.

I do like me some Dark Terror tones, though also with a boost :)

So do you have both the LBX 1 & 2? If so, I’m sure the variety of having the Dark Terror instead of one of the LBX 2 would be an advantage, rather than two EVH similar amps? I’m sure that’s what I’d prefer.

I don't mind boosting amps. In fact, my LBX 1 is the first and only amp I've ever liked without a boost. The thing I don't like about the II is that when I boost it, it just sounds like my LBX 1's red channel, just slightly worse, LOL. Not bad by any means. Just not as OMGZAWESOMEBALLZ as the 1, LOL.

And if I don't boost it, it just sounds kinda flubby and undergained.

Ah, I had forgotten about the Depth Finder!

I'm also looking at mods I could do for the Dark Terror. I've read many reviews where they state it doesn't have a lot of low-end, and that it's kinda bright and fizzy. I'm sure the Depth Finder could help with the low-end issue.
