Reminds me more of a Melodymaker than SG.

If you decide to change out those double creams I'm sure you could "donate" them to a good cause. Hint, Hint.

If it was a nice piece of wood under that Black, a Clear coat or Trans Amber would look great with double creams. How does it sound?

Really? I was not aware of this - thank you! I'll look around for those as well.

I will certainly keep you in mind - really.

I was thinking the same thing - only more of a cherry stain - we'll see.

It's been a while since I've heard it - so I'm not sure. But as I said, I'm considering putting my JB/Jazz set into it.

Now that I know just how nice that guitar is, that guitar is really, really nice. :D

Re: Show me your SG's

How do those three compare in terms of playability, tone etc.?
The historic bay far looked the best and could have easily been confused for a real vintage piece, requiring a detailed inspection of features + SN# to realize it was a reissue. The neck on those is a little bigger than the 61RI, but with the same shape. The neck joint is very different, and thicker. Both had 57 Classics but the historic was bassier sounding and not quite as clear.

The 61 was the best sounding, and great looking for a new, typical cherry red SG. It had more crunch and bite to it, which I preferred.

The Epi was cool for a copy, felling and sounding similar to the Gibson, but lacking some depth of the tone and not quite the same clarity.

I only have the 61RI anymore having sold the Epi and the historic.

Here's some more pics of the historic (click thumbs)

Re: Show me your SG's

It actually reminds me more of an Ibanez AX than either an SG or a Melody Maker.

I think you're onto something there. I did an google image search and found some that looked pretty close. The headstock and bridge are closer to mine.

The one thing I can't match is the pickup selector on top like an LP - and of course the coil tap switch on the bottom.

Thanks for the info :). I guess another give away as to whether the Historic was the "real deal" or not would be the inlays, as on your example they don't look aged. I suppose changing the tailpiece altered the tone a bit.

While I don't care much for Gibson, I'm a bit of a sucker for SGs. A family friend has a used, abused and modded (Grovers, tune-o-matic added) '61 Junior that's crying out for a setup and some playing... some folk have all the luck :grumble:.

I've heard it said that you haven't lived until you've played A, G, D, and E chords on an SG :).

Re: Show me your SG's

I'm really sorry if I offended anyone. Of course it isn't an SG, it's just a body that somewhat resembles an SG. Just like some guitars look like a Fender Stratocaster but they aren't made by Fender - but in polite company, if you call it a strat, most people will know what you are talking about.

I know full well that this guitar was NOT made by Gibson. It was probably some Chinese knock-off - and not a very good one at that.

Be that as it may - all I wanted was to see what some nice looking SG's looked like, hoping to be inspired about what I could do with this little project of mine.

Again I apologize to the purists and will refrain from saying ess-gee in your presence.

But if anyone else a picture of a guitar that may or may not be an SG that they are particularly proud of, that may be able to help me with this project - I would appreciate seeing it.

Thank you

hahahahaha

relax buddy, they're all just guitars in the end :smokin:
