I have a 57 reissue strat and im trying to get some pickups that have at least some shredding capabilities.I know i wont be able to pull of Real humbucker style from simple single coils.Im thinking of SD hot rails and Lil screaming demon. Are they good for soloing?

Re: Shredding

shredding in a strat? go for the dimarzio YJM pups those are made for shredding(what else to expect from malmsteen's signature pups?) and actually sound quite cool imo.

Re: Shredding

If you're looking for a humbucker sound, why dont you just buy a pickguard with humbucker cutouts and get some humbuckers? Then you can get the real humbucker sound. You would probably like a JB in the bridge. I dont know about the neck. Maybe a full shred.

But i personally like the sound of a single coil for shredding, and you dont neccessarily need a lot of output for shred. What you are looking for in a pickup to shred with is the eq, articulation, pick attack... Loserchief's reccomendation of the YJM pickups is good i you want a single coil sound.

Hope this helped

Re: Shredding

A hotrails is actually quite nice for a high gain in your face tone in a strat.. my teacher used to have a strat with 3x hotrails and a wilkison trem. It was a nice axe!

Re: Shredding

I doubt the hotrails will have the articulation that you want for shredding with high gain. I would recommend that you get the full size HBers and get the full shreds or a set of Bill Lawrence's L500's from www.billlawrence.com.

Re: Shredding

I don't think the 57 RI has a swimming pool rout, so the full size bucker is likely out of the question. A full set of hot rails might do the trick, although I've never used one in the neck position.

A lot of people say the Hot Rails is too bassy in the neck. It's something I was actually meaning to try when I bought the HR and CR for my Peavey. But I set it up this way first, and I loved it, so I haven't seen the reason to change. Even the cool rails had a lot of bass. The HR might work, but you'd probably want to back it off a bit farther from the strings than normal. I know the Hot Rails sounds good in the other positions.

If you're forced to stick with with single coil sized pups and want a HB sound, you might also consider the JB Jr. It really is a nice sounding pup that can be used for shredding, but as jmcorey said, it doesn't have quite the articulation of it's full sized brother.

Re: Shredding

You're right about the routing. :smack:
You're going to want something very articulate, I haven't played a Hotrails but I don't think it'll be the right thing.

Re: Shredding

How do ye all think a set up of Neck--Dimarzio YJM , Mid--SD jb junior, Bridge--Hot rails. How would the sound of the dimarzio and SD sound i wonder?Im not going for a complete shredding machine,I would just like my neck at least to be capable of pulling of some decent solos while having a bridge for some good chunky riffs and keeping the mid for a more clean, strat approach to things.

See at the moment i have a full set of lace sensors and god knows that you cant solo with them. They have no tone and finally im sick of listening to them screech at me.
